Abstract

A vibration sensor includes a substrate (5), a plate-like diaphragm (3) forming a capacitor, and holding means (2), (4), (6) for holding the diaphragm so as to be movable in parallel to the substrate. The diaphragm includes a plurality of flexible displacement portions (3c), (3d) for enabling the supporting portion of the diaphragm to be movable in parallel to the substrate. When vibrations are applied to the vibration sensor, the diaphragm portion of the diaphragm is vibrated and electrostatic capacity formed between the substrate and the diaphragm is changed based on the vibrations. Vibrations are detected on the basis of the change of electrostatic capacity. Since the vibration sensor includes the flexible displacement portions, the diaphragm becomes difficult to be vibrated due to a sound pressure and a vibration detected output can be prevented from being disturbed by the sound pressure.

Claims

1. A vibration sensor for use in a navigation apparatus comprising:

a substrate;

a circular diaphragm from which are integrally formed a diaphragm portion, a supporting portion and an plurality of flexible displacement portions for coupling said diaphragm portion and said supporting portion such that said diaphragm portion is able to move relative to said substrate, wherein said plurality of flexible displacement portions define therebetween a plurality of openings in said diaphragm which are sized and arranged to decrease said diaphragm'"'"'s responsiveness to sound vibrations;

an electret film disposed either on said substrate on opposite said diaphragm or on said diaphragm opposite said substrate; and

a holder for holding said substrate and said supporting portion of said diaphragm in such a manner that said diaphragm portion comes close to or away from said substrate in parallel.

2. A vibration sensor according to claim 1, wherein said plurality of flexible displacement portions extend radially with respect to a center of said diaphragm portion.

3. A vibration sensor according to claim 1, wherein said holder holds said substrate and said supporting portion of said diaphragm such that said diaphragm and said supporting portion of said diaphragm and said substrate are maintained at a predetermined distance from each other.

4. A vibration sensor according to claim 1, wherein said holder comprises a diaphragm ring, a spacer element and a cylindrical frame.

5. A vibration sensor according to claim 4, wherein said openings are disposed along a circumferential direction of said diaphragm.

6. A vibration sensor according to claim 4, wherein said spacer element is made of a synthetic resin having a thickness of about 40 mm.

7. A vibration sensor according to claim 1, wherein said diaphragm is made of a metal material.

8. A vibration sensor according to claim 7, wherein said metal material is 40 mm-thick stainless steel.

9. A vibration sensor according to claim 1, wherein an FET within said sensor is used to detect a change of electrostatic capacity between said diaphragm portion and said substrate.

10. A vibration sensor according to claim 1, wherein said flexible displacement portions are disposed at an angle to a radial direction of said diaphragm portion.

11. A vibration sensor according to claim 1, wherein a distance between said diaphragm portion and said supporting portion is less than a length of said flexible displacement portions.

12. A navigation apparatus comprising the vibration sensor of claim 1, further comprising a speed detecting circuit which uses an output of said vibration sensor to detect speed.

13. A navigation apparatus according to claim 12, further comprising an antenna which receives a positioning signal from an orbiting satellite, and a position detecting circuit which determines a current position of the navigation apparatus based on said positioning signal.

14. A navigation apparatus according to claim 13, further comprising map circuit for storing and retrieving map data.

15. A navigation apparatus according to claim 14, further comprising a controller which:

receives an indication of the position of said navigation apparatus from said position detecting circuit, map data from said map circuit, and an indication of the speed of said navigation apparatus from said speed detecting circuit; and

outputs to a display a map which shows a current location of said navigation apparatus.

16. A navigation apparatus comprising the vibration sensor of claim 10, further comprising a speed detecting circuit which uses an output of said vibration sensor to detect speed.

17. A navigation apparatus according to claim 16, further comprising an antenna which receives a positioning signal from an orbiting satellite, and a position detecting circuit which determines a current position of the navigation apparatus based on said positioning signal.

18. A navigation apparatus according to claim 17, further comprising map circuit for storing and retrieving map data.

19. A navigation apparatus according to claim 18, further comprising a controller which:

receives an indication of the position of said navigation apparatus from said position detecting circuit, map data from said map circuit, and an indication of the speed of said navigation apparatus from said speed detecting circuit; and

outputs to a display a map which shows a current location of said navigation apparatus.
