Abstract

A network element included in a telecommunication system contains several nodes (1226, 1232, 1234, 1236, 1238) which are included in a system internal to this network element and provides internal network element functions in an internal bearer service network, and internal resources in the form of hardware and software which are used for performing the internal network element functions.

The network element can offer an operations system a "white box" view, implying that internal resources are available to this operations system, enabling it to use managed objects representing the internal resources in order to manage the resources according to a second management information model in connection with using them for performing internal network element functions.

Claims

1. A telecommunications system comprising:

a network of elements providing functions to enable communications between elements;

each element including resources of hardware and software that are used to perform the functions, the software including objects representing the resources;

at least one operations system for performing the functions, in addition to setting up calls, having means for managing the resources according to a first management information model using the objects, wherein the elements offer the operations system a standardized service specific "black box" view of only the parts of the resources that are available and needed for communication between the elements and connected subscribers,

wherein at least one element includes several nodes, forming part of an internal system of the element, for providing functions in an internal bearer network service, and internal resources hardware and software for performing internal functions, the internal software including objects representing the internal resources and

the at least one element offers an operations system a "white box" view, wherein the internal resources are available to the operations system to manage the internal resources using the objects according to a second management information model, when using internal resources to perform the internal functions,

wherein the second management information model is implemented as an addition to the first management model and

a management information tree, based upon the second management information model, has in its root a managed object which is also used for management according to the first information model, and a management information tree, based upon the second management information model, has in its root a managed object which is also used for management according to the first information model.

2. A network element according to claim 1, wherein the root object is of a standard class specific to a transport network standard that can be used in the "black box" view.

3. A network element according to claim 1, wherein the root object contains an internal network specific managed object that supports network layering in the internal network.

4. A network element according to claim 1, wherein the root object contains an internal network specific managed object that supports network partition in the internal network and represents a subnetwork allowing partitioning into further subnetworks.

5. A network element according to claim 1, wherein the root object is of a class specifically used for management according to the second management information model.

6. A network element according to claim 5, wherein the object supporting network layering contains an internal network specific managed object that supports network partitioning in the internal network and represents a subnetwork allowing partitioning into further subnetworks.

7. A network element according to claim 5, wherein the object supporting network layering contains an internal network specific object representing a standard type trail.

8. A network element according to claim 5, wherein the object representing a partitionable subnetwork contains an internal network specific object representing a connection between termination points within subnetworks in the internal network.

9. A network element according to claim 5, wherein the object representing a partitionable subnetwork contains an internal network specific object representing a link connection in the internal network.

10. A network element according to claim 5, wherein the object representing a partitionable subnetwork contains an internal network specific object representing a non-partitionable subnetwork in the internal network.

11. A network element according to claim 10, wherein the object representing a non-partitionable subnetwork contains an object representing an occurrence of an object of standard class representing a termination point.

12. A network element according to claim 10, wherein the object representing a non-partitionable subnetwork contains an internal network specific object representing routing information for the non-partitionable subnetworks.

13. A network element according to claim 10, wherein the object representing a non-partitionable subnetwork contains an internal network specific object representing a logical grouping of circuit termination points in the internal switched network.

14. A network element according to claim 10, wherein the object representing a non-partitionable subnetwork contains an internal network specific object representing a function to allocate ATM vc channels having a certain bandwidth on a given group of ATM vp links in the internal switched network.

15. A network element according to claim 10, wherein the object representing a non-partitionable subnetwork contains an internal network specific object representing a crossconnect functionality for the non-partitionable subnetwork.

16. A network element according to claim 15, wherein the object representing a crossconnect functionality contains an internal network specific object representing a crossconnection between two termination points in a non-partitionable subnetwork.

17. A network element according to claim 15, wherein the object representing a crossconnect functionality contains an internal network specific object representing a logical grouping of transport termination points in the internal transport network.

18. A network element according to claim 15, wherein the object representing a crossconnect functionality contains an internal network specific object representing a function to allocate ATM vc channels having a certain bandwidth on a given group of ATM vp links in the internal transport network.
