Angiographic system with automatic high/low pressure switching
First Claim
1. An angiographic injection system for use in conjunction with a catheter having a distal end for insertion into a patient and having a proximal end, the system comprising:
- a motor driven syringe pump for supplying fluid under pressure;
a low pressure system;
a manifold having a first port for connection to the syringe pump, a second port for connection to the proximal end of the catheter, and a third port for connection to the low pressure system; and
a valve, associated with the manifold, having a first state and a mutually exclusive second state;
said first state being when the second and third ports are connected and said first and third ports are always disconnected;
said second state being when the first and second ports are connected and said first and third ports are always disconnected;
the valve being normally biased to the first state and being switchable to the second state when fluid pressure from the syringe pump reaches a predetermined pressure level.

Abstract
An angiographic injector system includes a manifold and valve which selectively connects either a syringe pump or a low pressure system to a catheter which is inserted into a patient. The valve is normally biased to a state which connects the low pressure system to the catheter for pressure monitoring, saline flushing, or aspirating functions. When an injection is to be made, the valve automatically switches so that the low pressure system is disconnected and not exposed to high pressure, while the syringe pump is connected through the manifold to the catheter.
