1. A system for extracorporeal treatment of heparinized whole blood comprising:

  • (a) two extracorporeal devices, a first extracorporeal device and a second extracorporeal device, connected in-line; and

    (b) means for introducing a precisely controlled flow of heparin into an extracorporeal blood circuit prior to the blood entering the first extracorporeal device;

    the second device containing antithrombin III covalently immobilized to a biocompatible polymer matrix for binding said heparin, the second device being inserted between the first device and a return line of the blood to a living being, so that said heparin is removed from the returned blood.
