1. A method of determining a leak component of gas flow in a respiratory gas supply system for supplying respiratory gas to a patient, comprising the steps of:
- determining a beginning and an end of a plurality of patient breaths, each breath comprised of an inspiratory phase and an expiratory phase;
integrating patient respiratory gas flow rate throughout said plurality of patient breaths to determine a total respiratory gas volume for said plurality of patient breaths; and
dividing said total respiratory gas volume for said plurality of patient breaths by a time duration of said plurality of patient breaths to determine a leakage rate for said plurality of patient breaths.

Abstract
An improved methodology and systems for delivery of breathing gas such as for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea through application of alternating high and low level positive airway pressure within the airway of the patient with the high and low airway pressure being coordinated with the spontaneous respiration of the patient, and improved methods and apparatus for triggering and for leak management in such systems.

6. A method of determining the rate of leakage from a respiratory gas supply system which supplies respiratory gas flow to a patient at specified flow rates and pressures comprising the steps of:
determining said rate of leakage as a leak which is proportional to the square root of pressure by a constant of proportionality K, where ##EQU3## the numerator of eq. 1 representing average leak flow and the denominator of eq. 1 representing the relationship between the leak rate and pressure.

7. A method of determining gas leakage in a respiratory gas supply system for supplying respiratory gas to a patient comprising the steps of:
-
determining the time duration of at least one patient breath; determining the average leak rate for said at least one patient breath; multiplying said average leak rate by said time duration of said at least one breath to determine a total leakage flow for said at least one breath; determining the average of a given function of gas pressure for said at least one breath; dividing said total leakage of said at least one breath by said average of said given function of gas pressure for said at least one breath to determine a constant of proportionality relating said average pressure to said leak rate; periodically determining the instantaneous pressure occurring during another patient breath subsequent to said at least one breath; and multiplying said given function of said periodically determined instantaneous pressures by said constant of proportionality to determine a leakage rate for said another patient breath as a function of pressure during said another patient breath.

determining said rate of leakage as a leak which is proportional to a given function of pressure by a constant of proportionality K, where ##EQU4## the numerator of eq. 2 representing average leak flow and the denominator of eq. 2 representing the relationship between the leakage and pressure.
