Abstract

A gyricon or twisting-ball display having superior reflectance characteristics comparing favorably with those of white paper. The display is based on a material made up of optically anisotropic particles, such as bichromal balls, disposed in a substrate having a surface. The particles situated closest to the substrate surface form substantially a single layer. Each particle in the layer has a center point, no particle in the layer being disposed entirely behind the center point of any nearest neighboring particle in the layer with respect to the substrate surface. Each particle in the layer has a projected area with respect to the substrate surface. Particles of the set are sufficiently closely packed with respect to one another in the layer that the union of their projected areas exceeds two-thirds of the area of the substrate surface. A rotatable disposition of each particle is achievable while the particle is thus disposed in the substrate; for example, the particles can already be rotatable in the substrate, or can be rendered rotatable in the substrate by a nondestructive operation. In particular, the particles can be situated in an elastomer substrate that is expanded by application of a fluid thereto so as to render the particles rotatable therein. A particle, when in its rotatable disposition, is not attached to the substrate. A reflective-mode display apparatus can be constructed from a piece of the material together with a mechanism (e.g., addressing electrodes) for facilitating rotation of at least one of the particles.

Claims

1. A material comprising:

a substrate having a surface, the surface having an area; and

a plurality of optically anisotropic particles disposed in the substrate, the plurality of particles including a set of particles situated closest to the substrate surface, the particles of the set forming substantially a single layer,

each particle in the layer having a center point, substantially no particle in the layer being disposed entirely behind the center point of any nearest neighboring particle in the layer with respect to the substrate surface,

each particle in the layer having a projected area with respect to the substrate surface, the particles of the set being sufficiently closely packed with respect to one another in the layer that the union of their projected areas exceeds two-thirds of the area of the substrate surface,

a rotatable disposition of each particle of the set being achievable while said particle is thus disposed in the substrate, said particle, when in said rotatable disposition, not being attached to the substrate.

2. The material of claim 1 wherein the particles are spheroidal balls.

3. The material of claim 1 wherein the particles of the set are rotatable in the substrate.

4. The material of claim 1 wherein the substrate comprises an elastomer that can be expanded by application of a fluid thereto so as to render the particles of the set rotatable therein.

5. The material of claim 1 wherein the particles in the layer are arrayed in a hexagonally packed array.

6. The material of claim 1 wherein each particle of the set has an anisotropy for providing an electrical dipole moment, the electrical dipole moment rendering the particle electrically responsive such that when the particle is rotatably disposed in an electric field while the electrical dipole moment is provided, the particle tends to rotate to an orientation in which the electrical dipole moment aligns with the electric field.

7. Apparatus comprising:

a piece of the material recited in claim 6; and

means for producing an electric field to facilitate a rotation of at least one particle rotatably disposed in the substrate of the piece of material.

The material of claim 1 wherein each particle has a plurality of component regions giving rise to said particle'"'"'s optical anisotropy, each region having an optical modulation characteristic, the regions including a first optically reflective component region and a second optically absorptive component region.

9. The material of claim 1 wherein the particles of the set are sufficiently closely packed in the layer that the union of their projected areas exceeds three-fourths of the area of the substrate surface.

10. The material of claim 1 wherein the particles of the set are sufficiently closely packed in the layer that the union of their projected areas exceeds four-fifths of the area of the substrate surface.

11. The material of claim 1 wherein the particles of the set are sufficiently closely packed in the layer that the union of their projected areas exceeds nine-tenths of the area of the substrate surface.

12. Apparatus comprising:

a piece of the material recited in claim 1; and

means for facilitating a rotation of at least one particle rotatably disposed in the substrate of the piece of material.

13. A material comprising:

a substrate having an optically transmissive surface; and

a plurality of optically anisotropic particles disposed in the substrate, each particle having an optically reflective component region, each particle having a preferred rotational orientation wherein the reflective region of the particle is proximate to the substrate surface, a rotatable disposition of each particle being achievable while the particle is disposed in the substrate, said particle, when in said rotatable disposition, not being attached to the substrate,

the particles being arranged in the substrate such that when a light susceptible to reflection by the reflective regions of the particles is incident on a portion of the substrate surface so as to illuminate through said portion those particles located in a vicinity of said portion while the particles in said vicinity are rotationally oriented in their preferred orientations, the particles in said vicinity modulate the light that illuminates them such that at least 15 percent of the light incident on said portion of the surface is ultimately reflected back though the substrate surface as measured by an integrating sphere technique.

14. The material of claim 13 wherein the particles in said vicinity modulate the light that illuminates them such that at least 15 percent of the light incident on said portion of the surface is ultimately diffusely reflected back through the substrate surface as measured by an integrating sphere technique.

15. The material of claim 13 wherein the particles in said vicinity modulate the light that illuminates them such that at least 30 percent of the light incident on said portion of the surface is ultimately reflected back through the substrate surface as measured by an integrating sphere technique.

16. The material of claim 13 wherein the particles in said vicinity modulate the light that illuminates them such that at least 40 percent of the light incident on said portion of the surface is ultimately reflected back through the substrate surface as measured by an integrating sphere technique.

17. The material of claim 13 wherein the particles in said vicinity modulate the light that illuminates them such that at least 50 percent of the light incident on said portion of the surface is ultimately reflected back through the substrate surface as measured by an integrating sphere technique.

18. The material of claim 13 wherein the particles in said vicinity modulate the light that illuminates them such that at least 60 percent of the light incident on said portion of the surface is ultimately reflected back through the substrate surface as measured by an integrating sphere technique.

19. The material of claim 13 wherein the particles in the vicinity modulate light such that the light ultimately reflected back through the substrate surface includes:

light reflected directly back through the substrate surface from the reflective components of particles in the vicinity; and

light reflected indirectly back through the substrate surface after being reflected initially from the reflective components of particles in the vicinity and thereafter undergoing at least one further reflection.

20. The material of claim 13 wherein the reflective regions of the particles are white, so that white light is susceptible to reflection by the reflective regions.

21. The material of claim 13 wherein

the substrate surface has an area;

and

the plurality of particles includes a set of particles situated closest to the substrate surface, the particles of the set forming substantially a single layer,

each particle in the layer having a center point, substantially no particle in the layer being disposed entirely behind the center point of any nearest neighboring particle in the layer with respect to the substrate surface,

the particles in said vicinity being disposed in the layer, light ultimately reflected back through the substrate surface thus being modulated by particles in the layer.

22. The material of claim 21 wherein the particles in the vicinity modulate light such that substantially all the light ultimately reflected back through the substrate surface is reflected at least initially from the reflective regions of particles in the layer.

23. The material of claim 21 wherein each particle in the layer has a projected area with respect to the substrate surface, the particles of the set being sufficiently closely packed with respect to one another in the layer that the union of their projected areas exceeds two-fifths of the area of the substrate surface.

24. The material of claim 21 wherein:

the particles in said vicinity modulate the light that illuminates them such that at least 40 percent of the light incident on said portion of the surface is ultimately reflected back through the substrate surface as measured by an integrating sphere technique; and

each particle in the layer has a projected area with respect to the substrate surface, the particles of the set being sufficiently closely packed with respect to one another in the layer that the union of their projected areas exceeds two-thirds of the area of the substrate surface.

25. The material of claim 13 wherein each particle further has an optically absorptive component region, the absorptive region being distal to the substrate surface when the particle is in the preferred rotational orientation.

26. A material comprising:

a substrate having an optically transmissive surface; and

a plurality of optically anisotropic particles disposed in the substrate, each particle having an optically absorptive component region, each particle having a preferred rotational orientation wherein the absorptive region of the particle is distal to the substrate surface, a rotatable disposition of each particle being achievable while the particle is disposed in the substrate, said particle, when in said rotatable disposition, not being attached to the substrate,

the particles being arranged in the substrate such that when a light susceptible to absorption by the absorptive regions of the particles is incident on a portion of the substrate surface so as to illuminate through said portion those particles located in a vicinity of said portion while the particles in said vicinity are rotationally oriented in their preferred orientations, the particles in said vicinity modulate the light that illuminates them such that at least 15 percent of the light incident on said portion of the surface ultimately emerges from the substrate through a surface thereof as measured by an integrating sphere technique.

27. Apparatus comprising:

a structure including a member having an optically transmissive surface for light entry into the apparatus and a member having an optically transmissive surface for light exit from the apparatus, the members having the optically transmissive surfaces optionally being one and the same member, the optically transmissive surfaces optionally being one and the same surface; and

a plurality of optical modulating elements disposed in the structure, each element comprising an optically anisotropic particle rotatable to present first and second optical modulation aspects towards the light entry surface, each particle having a preferred rotational orientation with respect to the light entry surface,

each particle having an anisotropy for providing an electrical dipole moment, the electrical dipole moment rendering the particle electrically responsive such that when the particle is rotatably disposed in an electric field while the electrical dipole moment is provided, the particle tends to rotate to an orientation in which the electrical dipole moment aligns with the electric field,

the modulating elements being situated with respect to the light entry surface and the light exit surface such that light can enter the apparatus via a portion of the light entry surface and be modulated by a set of the modulating elements in the apparatus and optionally at least some of the light thus modulated can exit from the apparatus via at least a portion of the light exit surface,

the modulating elements of the set modulating the light that illuminates them when the particles of the modulating elements of the set are in their preferred rotational orientations such that at least 15 percent of the light incident on said portion of the light entry surface ultimately exits through the light exit surface as measured by an integrating sphere technique.
