    coupling the blood flow lumen of the arterial catheter to a source of oxygenated blood;

    inserting the arterial catheter into the patient'"'"'s ascending aorta through a penetration in the patient'"'"'s aortic arch;

    passing an aortic occlusion catheter through the arterial catheter, the aortic occlusion catheter having a cardioplege lumen and an occluding member movable from a collapsed shape to an expanded shape;

    slidably moving the aortic occlusion catheter relative to the arterial catheter thereby positioning the occluding member in the patient'"'"'s ascending aorta;

    occluding the patient'"'"'s ascending aorta by moving the occluding member from the collapsed shape to the expanded shape;
