1. A knotting element for use in surgical procedures to effect a knot in a length of filamentous material comprisinga body for being attached to a segment of the length of filamentous material and defining a pair of opposed legs having opposed inner surfaces, at least one hook member extending inwardly from one of said inner surfaces and having an innermost end and at least one recess along the other of said inner surfaces corresponding to said hook member, said body being movable from an open position wherein said inner surfaces are spaced from one another with said hook member disposed externally of said recess to a closed position wherein said inner surfaces are adjacent one another with said hook member disposed within said recess, said innermost and of said hook member being entirely, internally disposed within said leg having said recess when said body is in said closed position, said hook member holding another segment of the length of filamentous material between said hook member and said one of said inner surfaces when said body is in said open position whereby, when said body is moved to said closed position, the another segment of the length of filamentous material is immovably held within said recess.
