Abstract

An image display apparatus which enables observation of a clear image at a wide field angle, and which is extremely small in size and light in weight and hence unlikely to cause the observer to be fatigued. The image display apparatus has an image display device (7) and an ocular optical system for projecting the image of the image display device and leading the projected image to an observer'"'"'s eyeball (1). The ocular optical system has, in the order of backward ray tracing, a first surface (3) which is a refracting surface, a second surface (4) which is a decentered reflecting surface of positive power, a third surface (5) which is a decentered reflecting surface, and a fourth surface (6) which is a refracting surface. At least two of the four surfaces have a finite curvature radius. A space formed by the first to fourth surfaces (3 to 6) is filled with a medium having a refractive index larger than 1. The two reflecting surfaces are disposed such that the principal ray extending from the observer'"'"'s eyeball (1) to the image display device (7) does not intersect its own path in the ocular optical system. Thus, the first-order image of the image display device (7) is formed on the retina of the observer'"'"'s eyeball.

Claims

1. An image display apparatus, comprising:

an image display device for displaying an image; and

an ocular optical system for projecting the image displayed by said image display device and leading the projected image to an observer'"'"'s eyeball,

said ocular optical system having at least four surfaces which include, in order in which light rays pass in backward ray tracing from said observer'"'"'s eyeball to said image display device, a first surface which is a refracting surface, a second surface which is a reflecting surface of positive power facing said first surface and decentered with respect to an observer'"'"'s visual axis, a third surface which is a reflecting surface facing said second surface and decentered with respect to the observer'"'"'s visual axis that has been reflected by said second surface, and a fourth surface which is a refracting surface closest to said image display device,

said four surfaces forming a prism, said prism being arranged such that a bundle of light rays emitted from said image display device passes through said prism and is led to a center and a periphery of a pupil of said observer'"'"'s eyeball,

wherein;

at least two of said at least four surfaces have a finite curvature radius;

a space formed by said first to fourth surfaces is filled with a medium having a refractive index larger than 1;

said two reflecting surfaces are disposed such that a principal ray extending from said observer'"'"'s eyeball to said image display device does not intersect its own path in said ocular optical system; and

a first-order image of said image display device is formed on a retina of said observer'"'"'s eyeball.

2. An image display apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said third surface is a reflecting surface having a convex surface directed toward said second surface.

3. An image display apparatus according to claim 2, wherein any one of said first to fourth surfaces is a decentered aspherical surface.

4. An image display apparatus according to claim 3, which satisfies the following condition in a case where a vertical plane containing said observer'"'"'s visual axis is defined as a YZ-plane:

where R_y2 is a curvature radius of said second surface in the YZ-plane, and R_y3 is a curvature radius of said third surface in the YZ-plane.

5. An image display apparatus according to claim 3 or 4, wherein any one of said first to fourth surfaces is an anamorphic surface.

6. An image display apparatus according to claim 3, which satisfies the following condition in a case where a vertical plane containing said observer'"'"'s visual axis is defined as a YZ-plane, and a horizontal plane containing said observer'"'"'s visual axis is defined as an XZ-plane:

where R_y2 is a curvature radius of said second surface in the YZ-plane, and R_x2 is a curvature radius of said second surface in the XZ-plane.

7. An image display apparatus according to claim 6, wherein either one of said first and fourth surfaces of said ocular optical system is tilted or decentered with respect to said visual axis.

8. An image display apparatus according to claim 7, which satisfies the following condition:

9. An image display apparatus according to claim 8, wherein said image display device has a display surface which is tilted with respect to said observer'"'"'s visual axis.

19. An image display apparatus according to any one of claims 1 to 4 or 6 to 15, further comprising means for positioning both said image display device said ocular optical system with respect to an observer'"'"'s head.

20. An image display apparatus according to any one of claims 1 to 4 or 6 to 15, further comprising means for supporting both said image display device and said ocular optical system with respect to an observer'"'"'s head so that said image display apparatus can be fitted to said observer'"'"'s head.

21. An image display apparatus according to any one of claims 1 to 4 or 6 to 15, further comprising means for supporting at least a pair of said image display apparatuses at a predetermined spacing.

22. An image display apparatus according to any one of claims 1 to 4 or 6 to 15, wherein said ocular optical system is used as an imaging optical system.

10. An image display apparatus, comprising:

an image display device for displaying an image; and

an ocular optical system for projecting the image displayed by said image display device and leading the projected image to an observer'"'"'s eyeball,

said ocular optical system including a decentered optical element having at least four surfaces which include, in order in which light rays pass in backward ray tracing from said observer'"'"'s eyeball to said image display device, a first surface which is a refracting surface, a second surface which is a reflecting surface of positive power facing said first surface and decentered with respect to an observer'"'"'s visual axis, a third surface which is a reflecting surface facing said second surface and decentered with respect to said observer'"'"'s visual axis that has been reflected by said second surface, and a fourth surface which is a refracting surface closest to said image display device,

said four surfaces forming a prism, said prism being arranged such that a bundle of light rays emitted from said image display device passes through said prism and is led to a center and periphery of a pupil of said observer'"'"'s eyeball,

wherein at least two of said at least four surfaces have a finite curvature radius, and

a space formed by said first to fourth surfaces is filled with a medium having a refractive index larger than 1,

said ocular optical system further including at least one optical surface having refracting action,

said decentered optical element and said at least one optical surface being disposed in an optical path extending from said image display device to said observer'"'"'s eyeball.

11. An image display apparatus according to claim 10, wherein said at least one optical surface is formed from a surface which produces chromatic aberration which is approximately equal in quantity but opposite in sign to chromatic aberration produced by said first surface.

12. An image display apparatus according to claim 11, wherein said at least one optical surface is disposed between said observer'"'"'s eyeball and the first surface of said decentered optical element.

13. An image display apparatus according to claim 11, wherein said at least one optical surface is disposed between the second and third surfaces of said decentered optical element.

14. An image display apparatus according to claim 11, wherein said at least one optical surface is disposed between the fourth surface of said decentered optical element and said image display device.

15. An image display apparatus according to claim 11, wherein said at least one optical surface is decentered with respect to said observer'"'"'s visual axis.

16. An image display apparatus according to claim 10, wherein a power of said at least one optical surface, together with refractive indices and Abbe'"'"'s numbers of mediums lying in front of and behind said at least one optical surface, is set such that said at least one optical surface produces chromatic aberration which is approximately equal in quantity but opposite in sign to chromatic aberration produced by said first surface.

17. An image display apparatus according to any one of claims 10 to 15, wherein said at least one optical surface is a cemented surface.

18. An image display apparatus according to claim 17, wherein said at least one optical surface and said decentered optical element form an air lens.
