Abstract

2-Methyl-4-(4-methyl-1-piperazinyl)-10H-thieno- 2,3-b! 1,5!benzodiazepine, or an acid salt thereof, has pharmaceutical properties, and is of particular use in the treatment of mental disorders. The compound has the following structure: ##STR1##

Claims

1. A method of treating a patient suffering from or susceptible to a pathologic psychological condition selected from the group consisting of Unspecified Mental Retardation;

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder;

Conduct Disorder, Undifferentiated Type;

Chronic Motor or Vocal Tic Disorder;

Transient Tic Disorder;

Tic Disorder NOS;

Primary Degenerative Dementia of the Alzheimer Type, Senile Onset, with Depression;

Primary Degenerative Dementia of the Alzheimer Type, Senile Onset, Uncomplicated;

Primary Degenerative Dementia of the Alzheimer Type, Presenile Onset, with Depression;

Primary Degenerative Dementia of the Alzheimer Type, Presenile Onset, Uncomplicated;

Bipolar Disorder, Mixed, Severe, without Psychotic Features;

Bipolar Disorder, Manic, Severe, without Psychotic Features;

Bipolar Disorder, Depressed, Severe, without Psychotic Features;

Major Depression, Single Episode, Severe, without Psychotic Features;

Major Depression, Recurrent, Severe, without Psychotic Features;

comprising administering to the patient an amount of 2-methyl-4-(4-methyl-1-piperazinyl)-10H-thieno- 2,3-b! 1,5!benzodiazepine, or an acid addition salt thereof, that is effective to treat the condition.

2. A method of claim 1 wherein the condition is Unspecified Mental Retardation;

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder;

Conduct Disorder, Undifferentiated Type;

Organic Mood Disorder;

Organic Personality Disorder;

Organic Mental Disorder;

Chronic Motor or Vocal Tic Disorder;

Transient Tic Disorder;

or Tic Disorder NOS.

3. A method of claim 1 wherein the condition is Primary Degenerative Dementia of the Alzheimer Type, Senile Onset, with Depression;

Primary Degenerative Dementia of the Alzheimer Type, Presenile Onset, with Depression;

Multi- infarct Dementia, with Depression;

Senile Dementia NOS;

Presenile Dementia NOS;

or Dementia.

4. A method of claim 1 wherein the condition is Bipolar Disorder, Mixed, Severe, without Psychotic Features;

Bipolar Disorder, Manic, Severe, without Psychotic Features;

Bipolar Disorder, Depressed, Severe, without Psychotic Features;

Major Depression, Single Episode, Severe, without Psychotic Features;

or Major Depression, Recurrent, Severe, without Psychotic Features.

5. A method of claim 1 wherein the condition is Body Dysmorphic Disorder;

Hypochondriasis;

Somatization Disorder;

Undifferentiated Somatoform Disorder;

Somatoform Disorder NOS;

Intermittent Explosive Disorder;

Kleptomania;

Pathological Gambling;

Pyromania;

Trichotillomania;

or Impulse-Control Disorder NOS.

6. A method of claim 1 wherein the effective amount is from 1 to 20 mg per day.

7. A method of treating a patient suffering from or susceptible to a pathologic psychological condition selected from the group consisting of Mental Retardation, Severity Unspecified;

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder;

Disruptive Behavior Disorder NOS;

Chronic Motor or Vocal Tic Disorder;

Transient Tic Disorder;

Tic Disorder NOS;

Dementia of the Alzheimer'"'"'s Type, With Late Onset, With Depressed Mood;

Dementia of the Alzheimer'"'"'s Type, With Late Onset, Uncomplicated;

Dementia of the Alzheimer'"'"'s Type, With Early Onset, With Depressed Mood;

Dementia of the Alzheimer'"'"'s Type, With Early Onset, Uncomplicated;

Bipolar I Disorder, Most Recent Episode Mixed, Severe Without Psychotic Features;

comprising administering to the patient an amount of 2-methyl-4-(4-methyl-1-piperazinyl)-10H-thieno- 2,3-b! 1,5!benzodiazepine, or an acid addition salt thereof, that is effective to treat the condition.

8. A method of claim 7 wherein the effective amount is from 1 to 20 mg per day.

A method of treating a patient suffering from or susceptible to the pathologic psychological condition called Primary Degenerative Dementia of the Alzheimer Type, Presenile Onset, with Delirium, comprising administering to the patient an amount of 2-methyl-4-(4-methyl-1-piperazinyl)-10H-thieno- 2,3-b! 1,5!benzodiazepine, or an acid addition salt thereof, that is effective to treat the condition.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the effective amount is from 1 to 20 mg per day.

11. A method of treating a patient suffering from or susceptible to the pathologic psychological condition called Personality Disorder, Schizoid, comprising administering to the patient an amount of 2-methyl-4-(4-methyl-1-piperazinyl)-10H-thieno- 2,3-b! 1,5!benzodiazepine, or an acid addition salt thereof, that is effective to treat the condition.

A method of treating a patient suffering from or susceptible to the pathologic psychological condition called Personality Disorder, Schizotypal, comprising administering to the patient an amount of 2-methyl-4-(4-methyl-1-piperazinyl)-10H-thieno- 2,3-b! 1,5!benzodiazepine, or an acid additional salt thereof, that is effective to treat the condition.
