1. A display comprising:
- a face plate having an inner surface;
a back plate having an inner surface opposing the inner surface of the face plate the face plate and the back plate defining an interspace region, the interspace region being evacuated;
an electron source disposed within the interspace region and opposing the inner surface of the face plate; and
a phosphor disposed on the face plate, the phosphor comprising an electron-excitable UV-emitting material and a UV-excitable light-emitting phosphor, the UV-excitable light-emitting phosphor disposed to receive UV radiation emitted by the electron-excitable UV-emitting material, the electron-excitable UV-emitting material comprising a sol-gel product.

The phosphor (49, 72, 70) includes an electron-excitable UV-emitting material (52, 72) and a UV-excitable light-emitting phosphor (50, 70). The UV-excitable light-emitting phosphor (50, 70) is disposed to receive UV radiation emitted by the electron-excitable UV-emitting material (52, 72). The electron-excitable UV-emitting material (52, 72) includes a sol-gel product formed using sol-gel techniques.
