1. A data processing system, having a predetermined configuration comprising:

  • a central processing unit for executing instructions stored in a memory;

    a plurality of peripheral ports at a plurality of physical locations, wherein said physical locations are specified in terms of the location of the ports relative to the parameters of the predetermined configuration within the data processing system; and

    a routing network for coupling said central processing unit to said peripheral ports, said routing network having network storage means for storing location information specifying the physical locations of each of said ports coupled to said routing network, and control means responsive to a location command for reporting said location information to said central processing unit, wherein said location information is sufficient to specify the location of each of said peripheral ports without reference to any other information.
