1. A detection device for tissue oxygen and/or pH (CO2) measurement in animals and humans comprising fiber optics means for transmitting emitted phosphorescent and/or fluorescent light, a probe at one end of the fiber optic means comprising a portion of the fiber optic means enclosed by a gas-permeable film, and a reservoir of a liquid which contains an oxygen quenchable phosphorescence emitting oxygen sensor and/or a fluorescence emitting pH sensor situated between the gas-permeable film and the fiber optic means, and further comprising at the other end of the fiber optic means phosphorescent and/or fluorescent detecting means and excitation light emitting means.
