A compression moldable finely divided homogeneous particulate excipient blend for producing compacted solid dosage forms, consisting essentially of microcrystalline cellulose having a particle size from about 20 to about 90 microns and a nitrogen compound selected from the group consisting of urea, ammonium sulfate and ammonium phosphate, in which the weight ratio of microcrystalline cellulose to nitrogen compound is from 2:

  • 1 to about 1;

    3, said composition optionally containing from 0.5 to 25% by weight, based on the microcrystalline cellulose, of a suspending agent selected from water soluble hydrocolloids compatible with and effective for assisting in the hydration of microcrystalline cellulose.
