Abstract

A flexible substrate (110) having flexibility and a fixed substrate (120) disposed so as to oppose it are supported at their peripheral portions by a sensor casing (140). An oscillator (130) is fixed on the lower surface of the flexible substrate. Five lower electrode layers (F1 to F5: F1 and F2 are disposed at front and back of F5) are formed on the upper surface of the flexible substrate. Five upper electrode layers (E1 to E5) are formed on the lower surface of the fixed substrate so as to oppose the lower electrodes. In the case of detecting an angular velocity ωx about the X-axis, an a.c. voltage is applied across a predetermined pair of opposite electrode layers (E5, F5) to allow the oscillator to undergo oscillation Uz in the Z-axis direction. By change of the capacitance value, it is possible to detect the magnitude of the Coriolis force Fy, and to determine angular velocity ωx. Similarly, it is possible to detect an angular velocity ωy about the Y-axis and an angular velocity ωz about the Z-axis.

Claims

1. A multi-axial angular velocity sensor for detecting angular velocity components about at least two coordinate axes in a three-dimensional coordinate system, comprising:

a detection body having flexibility and including a detection layer made of a piezoelectric element;

a plurality of upper electrodes provided on an upper surface of said detection layer;

a plurality of lower electrodes provided on a lower surface of said detection layer and disposed at positions respectively opposite to the plurality of upper electrodes;

an oscillator fixed to said detection body;

a sensor casing for supporting said detection body and accommodating the oscillator therewithin;

means for applying an a.c. signal across a pair of lower and upper electrodes opposite to each other to thereby oscillate the oscillator in a particular coordinate axial direction; and

means for detecting a potential produced across a pair of lower and upper electrodes opposite to each other, thus to detect a displacement in a particular coordinate axial direction of the oscillator.

2. A multi-axial angular velocity sensor as set forth in claim 1:

wherein the detection body includes a supporting structure for supporting said detection layer.

3. A multi-axial angular velocity sensor as set forth in claim 1:

wherein either the plural lower electrodes or the plural upper electrodes are a single electrode layer.

4. A multi-axial angular velocity sensor as set forth in claim 3:

wherein the detection body including the detection layer made of piezoelectric element and a flexible substrate fixed on a lower surface of said detection layer, said flexible substrate being made of conductive material so as to be used as a single electrode layer.

5. A multi-axial angular velocity sensor as set forth in claim 1:

wherein an XYZ three-dimensional coordinate system such that an X-axis and a Y-axis intersect with each other on a plane in parallel to a principal surface of the detection layer is defined, and an arbitrary W-axis intersecting, at an origin of the coordinate system, with the X-axis and the Y-axis is defined on the XY plane;

wherein first and second upper electrodes of the plurality of upper electrodes are provided at a position such that a projected image onto the XY plane is located at a negative portion of the X-axis, and third and fourth upper electrodes of the plurality of upper electrodes are provided at a position such that a projected image onto the XY plane is located at a positive portion of the X-axis;

wherein fifth and sixth upper electrodes of the plurality of upper electrodes are provided at a position such that a projected image onto the XY plane is located at a negative portion of the Y-axis, and seventh and eighth upper electrodes of the plurality of upper electrodes are provided at a position such that a projected image onto the XY plane is located at a positive portion of the Y-axis;

wherein ninth and tenth upper electrodes of the plurality of upper electrodes are provided at a position such that a projected image onto the XY plane is located at a negative portion of the W-axis, and eleventh and twelfth upper electrodes of the plurality of upper electrodes are provided at a position such that a projected image onto the XY plane is located at a positive portion of the W-axis; and

wherein the second, third, sixth, seventh, tenth and eleventh upper electrodes are provided at a position close to the origin relative to the first, fourth, fifth, eighth, ninth and twelfth upper electrodes.

6. A multi-axial angular velocity sensor as set forth in claim 5:

wherein the detection layer is composed of a first portion interposed between the first upper electrode and the first lower electrode, a second portion interposed between the second upper electrode and the second lower electrode, a third portion interposed between the third upper electrode and the third lower electrode, a fourth portion interposed between the fourth upper electrode and the fourth lower electrode, a fifth portion interposed between the fifth upper electrode and the fifth lower electrode, a sixth portion interposed between the sixth upper electrode and the sixth lower electrode, a seventh portion interposed between the seventh upper electrode and the seventh lower electrode, an eighth portion interposed between the eighth upper electrode and the eighth lower electrode, a ninth portion interposed between the ninth upper electrode and the ninth lower electrode, a tenth portion interposed between the tenth upper electrode and the tenth lower electrode, an eleventh portion interposed between the eleventh upper electrode and the eleventh lower electrode, and a twelfth portion interposed between the twelfth upper electrode and the twelfth lower electrode, the polarization characteristic with respect to the first, third, fifth, seventh, ninth and twelfth portions and the polarization characteristic with respect to the second, fourth, sixth, eighth, tenth and eleventh portions being caused to be opposite to each other.

7. A multi-axial angular velocity sensor as set forth in claim 5:

wherein there is further provided control means for executing;

a first detecting operation for applying an a.c. signal across the ninth upper electrode and the ninth lower electrode, across the tenth upper electrode and the tenth lower electrode, across the eleventh upper electrode and the eleventh lower electrode, and across the twelfth upper electrode and the twelfth lower electrode and detecting, with the oscillator being oscillated in the Z-axis direction, a potential produced across the fifth upper electrode and the fifth lower electrode, a potential produced across the sixth upper electrode and the sixth lower electrode, a potential produced across the seventh upper electrode and the seventh lower electrode, and a potential produced across the eighth upper electrode and the eighth lower electrode, thus to detect an angular velocity component about the X-axis on the basis of said respective potentials produced;

a second detecting operation for applying an a.c. signal across the first upper electrode and the first lower electrode, across the second upper electrode and the second lower electrode, across the third upper electrode and the third lower electrode, and across the fourth upper electrode and the fourth lower electrode and detecting, with the oscillator being oscillated in the X-axis direction, a potential produced across the ninth upper electrode and the ninth power electrode, a potential produced across the tenth upper electrode and the tenth lower electrode, a potential produced across the eleventh upper electrode and the eleventh lower electrode, and a potential produced across the twelfth upper electrode and the twelfth lower electrode, thus to detect an angular velocity component about the Y-axis on the basis of said respective potentials produced; and

a third detecting operation for applying an a.c. signal across the fifth upper electrode and the fifth lower electrode, across the sixth upper electrode and the sixth lower electrode, across the seventh upper electrode and the seventh lower electrode, and across the eighth upper electrode and the eighth lower electrode and detecting, with the oscillator being oscillated in the Y-axis direction, a potential produced across the first upper electrode and the first lower electrode, a potential produced across the second upper electrode and the second lower electrode, a potential produced across the third upper electrode and the third lower electrode, and a potential produced across the fourth upper electrode and the fourth lower electrode, thus to detect an angular velocity component about the Z-axis on the basis of said respective potentials produced.

8. A multi-axial angular velocity sensor as set forth in claim 5:

wherein there is further provided control means for executing;

a first detecting operation for applying an a.c. signal across the first upper electrode and the first lower electrode, across the second upper electrode and the second lower electrode, across the third upper electrode and the third lower electrode, and across the fourth upper electrode and the fourth lower electrode and detecting, with the oscillator being oscillated in the X-axis direction, a potential produced across the ninth upper electrode and the ninth lower electrode, a potential produced across the tenth upper electrode and the tenth lower electrode, a potential produced across the eleventh upper electrode and the eleventh lower electrode, and a potential produced across the twelfth upper electrode and the twelfth lower electrode, thus to detect an angular velocity component about the Y-axis on the basis of said respective potentials produced; and

a second detecting operation for applying an a.c. signal across the first upper electrode and the first lower electrode, across the second upper electrode and the second lower electrode, across the third upper electrode and the third lower electrode, and across the fourth upper electrode and the fourth lower electrode and detecting, with the oscillator being oscillated in the X-axis direction, a potential produced across the fifth upper electrode and the fifth lower electrode, a potential produced across the sixth upper electrode and the sixth lower electrode, a potential produced across the seventh upper electrode and the seventh lower electrode, and a potential produced across the eighth upper electrode and the eighth lower electrode, thus to detect an angular velocity component about the Z-axis on the basis of said respective potentials produced.

9. A multi-axial angular velocity sensor as set forth in claim 5:

wherein there is further provided control means for executing;

a first detecting operation for applying an a.c. signal across the ninth upper electrode and the ninth lower electrode, across the tenth upper electrode and the tenth lower electrode, across the eleventh upper electrode and the eleventh lower electrode, and across the twelfth upper electrode and the twelfth lower electrode and detecting, with the oscillator being oscillated in the Z-axis direction, a potential produced across the fifth upper electrode and the fifth lower electrode, a potential produced across the sixth upper electrode and the sixth lower electrode, a potential produced across the seventh upper electrode and the seventh lower electrode, and a potential produced across the eighth upper electrode and the eighth lower electrode, thus to detect an angular velocity component about the X-axis on the basis of said respective potentials produced; and

a second detecting operation for applying an a.c. signal across the ninth upper electrode and the ninth lower electrode, across the tenth upper electrode and the tenth lower electrode, across the eleventh upper electrode and the eleventh lower electrode, and across the twelfth upper electrode and the twelfth lower electrode and detecting, with the oscillator being oscillated in the Z-axis direction, a potential produced across the first upper electrode and the first lower electrode, a potential produced across the second upper electrode and the second lower electrode, a potential produced across the third upper electrode and the third lower electrode, and a potential produced across the fourth upper electrode and the fourth lower electrode, thus to detect an angular velocity component about the Y-axis on the basis of said respective potentials produced.

10. A multi-axial angular velocity sensor as set forth in claim 1:

wherein an XYZ three-dimensional coordinate system such that an X-axis and a Y-axis intersect with each other on a plane in parallel to a principal surface of the detection layer is defined;

wherein a first pair of upper and lower electrodes are provided at a position such that a projected image onto the XY plane is located at a negative portion of the X-axis, a second pair of upper and lower electrodes are provided at a position such that a projected image onto the XY plane is located at a positive portion of the X-axis, a third pair of upper and lower electrodes are provided at a position such that a projected image onto the XY plane is located at a negative portion of the Y-axis, and a fourth pair of upper and lower electrodes are provided at a position such that a projected image onto the XY plane is located at a positive portion of the Y-axis; and

wherein an additional pair of upper and lower electrodes are further provided at a position such that the oscillator is caused to be oscillated in the Z-axis direction by applying an a.c. signal across said additional pair of electrodes.

11. A multi-axial angular velocity sensor as set forth in claim 10:

wherein there is further provided control means for executing;

a first detecting operation for applying an a.c. signal across the additional pair of electrodes so that the oscillator is caused to be oscillated in the Z-axis direction, and detecting a potential produced across the third pairs of electrodes and a potential produced across the fourth pairs of electrodes to detect an angular velocity component about the X-axis on the basis of said respective potentials produced; and

a second detecting operation for applying an a.c. signal across the additional pair of electrodes so that the oscillator is caused to be oscillated in the Z-axis direction, and detecting a potential produced across the first pairs of electrodes and a potential produced across the second pairs of electrodes to detect an angular velocity component about the Y-axis on the basis of said respective potentials produced.
