1. In a spread spectrum communication system, a method for correcting errors when at least one channel is in a fade, comprising the steps of:

  • receiving a signal transmitted as a spread spectrum signal on a plurality of narrow band channels;

    converting the spread spectrum signal into a frequency domain signal comprising a plurality of frequency samples;

    computing, in response to the step of converting, an energy value of a frequency sample being received in a narrow band channel;

    establishing a ratio of a maximum energy value and a next to largest energy value to an eye-opening threshold;

    generating a matrix indicating probability of error of the frequency sample;

    comparing the probability of error in the matrix to a fading threshold;

    marking, in response to the step of comparing, the frequency sample determined to be in fade as an erasure; and

    error correcting the plurality of frequency samples with the erasure being marked when at least one channel is determined to be in a fade.
