1. A rate-responsive pacemaker, comprising:

  • a pulse generator for producing pacing pulses at an adjustable rate;

    a control circuit responsive to a signal indicative of physical activity and having an output coupled to the pulse generator, the control circuit determining the rate at which the pulse generator produces the pacing pulses in accordance with the physical activity; and

    a transducer for generating the signal indicative of physical activity, the transducer comprising a single cantilever beam having one fixed end and one free end, the cantilever beam comprising at least one piezoelectric polymer layer, the cantilever beam deflecting in response to accelerations associated with the physical activity thereby developing mechanical stresses in the at least one piezoelectric polymer layer and a resulting electrical potential across the at least one polymer layer as a function of the mechanical stresses, the electrical potential furnishing the signal indicative of physical activity.
