1. A method of operating an implantable medical device, the device having an operating memory therein for storing a programmable sequence of operating instructions for controlling a primary operating function of the device, a data memory for storing acquired reference and trial data, and a telemetry system for telemetering stored data to an external programmer upon receiving a programmable interrogation command, the method comprising the steps of:

  • (a) enabling a sequence of operating instructions controlling a primary operating function of the medical device during a reference time period;

    (b) acquiring reference data related to the primary operating function of the medical device during the reference time period;

    (c) enabling a sequence of operating instructions controlling a trial operating function of the medical device in conjunction with implanting the medical device during a trial time period;

    (d) acquiring trial data related to the trial operating function of the medical device during the trial time period, and(e) interrogating, using the external programmer, the memory of the device.
