1. A method of establishing and conducting high speed asynchronous data communication between a remotely located call originator and a network access server linked to a host computer system, said call originator comprising a data terminal and a remote modem, said network access server comprising a host modem, the method comprising the steps of:
- transmitting data from said data terminal to said remote modem;
establishing an asymmetrical communication session during a call set-up phase between said remote modem and said host modem, comprising the steps of;
(a) transmitting a first signal associated with high speed asynchronous transmission from said remote modem to said host modem;
(b) said host modem detecting said first signal and responsively issuing a predetermined pattern to said remote modem; and
(c) said remote modem initiating high speed training with said host modem in response to said pattern, said remote modem transmitting at a high speed, said host modem transmitting at a relatively low speed; and
thereaftertransmitting data from said remote modem to said host modem at a high speed, said host modem transmitting said data to said host computer system;
reversing the transmission rates of said remote and host modems, such that said host modem initiates transmission at high speed and said remote modem initiates transmission at a relatively low speed; and
transmitting a second signal from said host modem to said remote modem at high speed, said second signal responsive to said data transmission from said data terminal.

Abstract
A method of processing incoming digital telephone calls from remotely located call originators which are destined for receipt by a host computer system. The host computer system is linked to the telephone network by a network access server. The call originators may be any type of data terminal, such as a personal computer or a credit card swipe, which is connected to a modem. The network access server extracts control signals imparted onto the telephone line and correlates the control signals with particular communications, routing or applications protocols identified with the call originators. The modem in the network access server which answers the call is configured during the call connect process and placed in a compatible format for the communications protocol of the incoming call. This dynamic custom configuration of the modem reduces the overall telephone call connection and processing time. The control signals may also be used by network access server for customized call routing or by the network access server or host computer system to run specialized application programs. The method is particularly suitable for use by large enterprises handling a high volume of incoming calls in which data is transmitted to the host computer system according to a variety of different communications protocols, or where the implementation of different routing paths or applications programs is desireable according to the identity or classification of the call originator.

In a network access server comprising a chassis having a plurality of modems including a host modem, a telephone line interface for connecting said network access server to a telephone line and a computer network interface for connecting said network access server to a computer network and a host computer system, a method for decreasing the overall connection time for a communication between said network access server and a remote modem associated with a remotely located data terminal, comprising the steps of:

receiving said communication at said telephone line interface of said network access server and directing said communication to said host modem in said plurality of modems; exchanging signals, during a call set-up phase for said call, between said host modem and said remote modem, to determine whether said remote modem and said host modem are capable of transmitting data therebetween in accordance with a predetermined asymmetrical communication format; if said exchange of signals indicates that asymmetrical communication format is compatible with said remote and host modems, responsively transmitting data between said remote modem and said host modem in accordance with said asymmetrical communications format; and routing data received by said host modem from said remote modem to a host computer system connected to said network access server via said network interface during a period in which said remote and host modems arc transmitting in accordance with said asymmetrical communication format, and routing data received from said host computer via said network interface back to said remote modem in accordance with said asymmetrical communication format. - View Dependent Claims (8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18)
