Abstract

The present invention relates to free-ink type ink-jet pens. A spring-loaded regulator mechanism is provided within the pen to allow ink from a pressurized ink reservoir to be fed to the pen while maintaining a predetermined set point back-pressure at the printhead as needed for appropriate pen operation. A mechanism in communication with the ambient atmosphere is used in conjunction with a substantially constant force biasing mechanism to maintain the balance between the countervailing forces. Back-pressure is maintained substantially constant regardless of the ink flow rate from the ink reservoir into the pen.

Claims

1. An ink-jet pen adapted for use with a remote ink reservoir having a predetermined reservoir ink volume capacity and a mechanism for supplying ink from the ink reservoir to the ink-jet pen apparatus at a predetermined positive feed pressure greater than or equal to ambient atmospheric pressure, the ink-jet pen comprising:

a pen body having at least one ink containment chamber therein, the chamber having an ink volume capacity substantially less than the reservoir ink volume capacity;

a thermal ink-jet print head coupled to the pen body and in fluidic communication with the ink containment chamber; and

regulating means, mounted within the ink containment chamber for fluidically coupling the ink containment chamber to the ink reservoir on an ink inlet first side of the regulating means with the print head fluidically coupled to the ink containment chamber on an opposing second side of the regulating means, and for regulating flow of ink into the ink containment chamber from the ink reservoir by including a valve means for selectively varying ink flow rate and for shutting off ink flow from the ink reservoir through said ink inlet first side into the ink containment chamber, and further including, coupled to the valve means, biasing means, having a substantially constant bias force during the varying ink flow rates from the ink reservoir into the ink containment chamber, for biasing the valve means toward a closed condition against the ambient atmospheric pressure, the regulating means maintaining a predetermined, substantially constant, back-pressure set point relative to ambient atmospheric pressure at the ink-jet print head during varying ink flow rates from the ink reservoir into the ink containment chamber through the valve means.

2. The ink-jet pen as set forth in claim 1, further comprising:

adjusting means for adjusting the predetermined back-pressure set point.

3. The ink-jet pen as set forth in claim 1, the valve means further comprising:

a valve seat, movable to open and close the valve means,

a valve seat mount, having the valve seat mounted thereon, and

the biasing means, coupled to the valve seat mount, holding the valve seat in a position closing the valve means until the biasing force is overcome by ambient atmospheric pressure.

4. The ink-jet pen as set forth in claim 3, wherein the biasing means further comprises:

a torsion spring.

5. The ink-jet pen as set forth in claim 3, wherein the regulating means further comprises:

the biasing means is a linear force biasing mechanism, coupled to the valve seat mount, for biasing the valve seat to close the valve means at a predetermined biasing force, and

a diaphragm mechanism coupled to the valve seat mount and adapted to be! for deflecting to open the valve mechanism when ambient atmospheric pressure is greater than the predetermined back-pressure set point.

6. The ink-jet pen as set forth in claim 5, wherein the diaphragm mechanism further comprises:

a flexible diaphragm having areal dimensions such that when the diaphragm is in a deflected condition the diaphragm has a maximum surface area capable of a conforming mounting within the ink containment chamber.

7. An ink-jet pen device for a hard copy apparatus including an ink reservoir means for providing ink under pressure greater than or equal to atmospheric pressure to the pen device, the reservoir means having a first volume ink capacity, and a means for delivering print media to the pen device, the ink-jet pen device comprising:

print head means for transferring droplets of ink to the print media during printing operation of the hard copy apparatus;

ink containing means, having the print head means mounted thereon, for containing an on-board supply of ink for the print head means such that the print head means has a predetermined on-board volume of ink available wherein the on-board volume is less than the first volume; and

regulating means, enclosed within the ink containing means, for regulating flow of ink from the ink reservoir means into the ink containing means by having a valving means for controlling the flow of ink from the ink reservoir means into the ink containing means and a biasing means, coupled to the valving means for exerting a substantially constant bias force on the valving means, and for controlling the valving means in response to a force due to a pressure differential between ambient atmospheric pressure and the substantially constant bias force and for maintaining a predetermined, substantially constant, back-pressure at the print head means during varying ink flow rates from the ink reservoir means into the ink containing means.

8. The device as set forth in claim 7, further comprising:

adjusting means for adjusting the biasing means substantially constant bias force to a predetermined bias force set point to establish a predetermined back-pressure set point less than ambient atmospheric pressure at the print head.

9. The device as set forth in claim 8, wherein the biasing means further comprises:

at least one torsion spring having a substantially constant spring force.

10. The device as set forth in claim 8, wherein the biasing means further comprises:

a torsion spring, having a first extremity extension member fixedly coupled to the regulating means, a free floating coil member within the ink containing means, and a second extremity fixedly coupled to the ink containing means.

11. The device as set forth in claim 8, wherein the biasing means further comprises:

at least one negator spring.

12. The device as set forth in claim 7, wherein the regulating means further comprises:

a diaphragm member deforming to expand and contract in response to a pressure differential between ambient atmospheric pressure force on the diaphragm member and the substantially constant bias force such that the valving means opens as ambient atmospheric pressure force exceeds the substantially constant bias force.

13. The device as set forth in claim 12, wherein the diaphragm member further comprises:

a flexible diaphragm having an area of a shape and dimensions such that the area in communication with ambient atmospheric pressure is maximized for an ink containing means of a given shape and dimensions.

14. The device as set forth in claim 12, further comprising:

venting means through the ink containment means such that the diaphragm member can be flexed to exert a positive pressure within the ink containment means such that vapor and ink within the ink containment chamber is forcibly expelled out of the ink containment chamber through the print head means.

15. An ink-jet pen for use with an off-axis ink reservoir, comprising:

a pen body, having a fluid tight ink containment chamber with an inlet port for receiving ink from the off-axis ink reservoir and a diaphragm aperture through the body, the chamber having a capacity less than the reservoir;

a print head coupled to the pen body;

a flexible, ink impermeable, diaphragm mounted in the diaphragm aperture of the pen body, having a first surface within the ink containment chamber and a second surface in communication with ambient atmospheric pressure;

a plunger coupled to the first surface of the diaphragm;

a valve seat coupled to the plunger adjacent the inlet port such that ink flow from the off-axis reservoir is valved by variably moving the valve seat onto and off of the inlet port in response to movement of the diaphragm; and

a biasing mechanism coupled to the plunger and exerting a near linear force on the plunger such that the diaphragm is balanced against a force exerted on the second surface by the ambient atmosphere at the predetermined back-pressure set point at the print head regardless of the rate of flow of ink through the valve when the valve seat is moved off of the inlet port due to a force exerted by a differential between ambient atmospheric pressure and the back-pressure such that ink in the ink containment chamber is supplied to the print head at a predetermined back-pressure set point.
