1. A connection-oriented packet switching network including a plurality of switching nodes interconnected by transmission links, and in which data packets are transmitted on an active path between a source node and a destination node wherein bandwidth is allocated by means of a bandwidth reservation on all transmission links between said source node and said destination node for said active path, said connection-oriented packet switching network comprising:

  • means for allocating bandwidth to an alternate path between said source node and said destination node such that on all transmission links common to both said active path and said alternate path the bandwidth allocation for said active path is shared with said alternate path without a double reservation of bandwidth for said alternate path; and

means for transferring said shared bandwidth allocation from said active path to said alternate path.
