1. An apparatus for transmutation of target isotopes, comprising:
- a) a source of rapidly repetitive high average current ion beam pulses, wherein the average power of said ion beam pulses is greater than about 1 kilowatt;
b) a target for said ion beam pulses comprising said target isotopes and so positioned that said ion beam pulses interact with said target isotopes; and
c) means for cooling said target.
