Method and apparatus for configuring a split modem
First Claim
1. A method for configuring a split modem in a cellular radio communications system where the split modem'"'"'s front end communicates with the split modem'"'"'s back end via a radio link comprising the steps of:
- a) inputting configuration information;
b) storing at least some of said configuration information from a previous call-attempt initiated by said modem front end; and
c) transmitting at least some of said stored configuration information via said radio link to said modem back end upon at least one call-attempt initiated by said modem front end after the first call-attempt initiated by said modem front end in a communications session.

Abstract
An apparatus and method for configuring a modem in a cellular radio communications system when the modem front end is physically separated from the modem back end. The method includes the steps of inputting the configuration information, comparing that configuration information against default configuration parameters to identify any non-default configuration information, storing that non-default configuration information, and transmitting that non-default configuration information via a radio link to the modem back end on each call-attempt. In this manner, the problem of lost configuration information is overcome, and the modem back end is properly configured for operation with communication software programs on each data call-attempt. The apparatus allows for configuration information to be retained by the modem front end for an entire communication session and the transmission of non-default configuration information to the paired modem back end each time a call-attempt is made. Use of the method and apparatus results in an improved performance to users of modems in a cellular radio communications system, particularly whenever a data call-attempt fails on the first try.

15. A split modem for communicating over a cellular radio communications system comprising:
-
a) a modem front end having a first data port for interfacing with a computer; b) a modem back end physically separate from said modem front end having a second data port for interfacing with a telecommunications network; c) said modem front end being capable of comparing configuration information received at said first data port against predetermined default configuration information to identify non-default remote profile data; d) said modem front end being capable of storing said non-default remote profile data; and e) said modem front end being operative to output said non-default remote profile data to a transmitting device for transmission to said modem back end upon at least one call-attempt initiated by said modem front end after the first call-attempt initiated by said modem front end in a communications session so that said modem back end can be properly configured. - View Dependent Claims (16, 17)
