Attachment apparatus for an implantable medical device employing ultrasonic energy
First Claim
1. An implantable medical device comprising a hermetically sealed enclosure, a header module formed of a thermoplastic material, and a mechanism for attaching the hermetically sealed enclosure to the header module, the mechanism comprising:
- an upstanding attachment tab having a lower portion connected to a predetermined location disposed on a first mating surface of the enclosure, a free end of the upstanding attachment tab extending in a predetermined direction away from the first mating surface;
a tab channel disposed in the header module extending upwardly away from a second mating surface of the header module, the channel being sized to receive the upstanding attachment tab therein wherein at least portions of the first and second mating surfaces engage and are aligned respecting one another;
a recess formed in the upstanding attachment tab; and
header module solidified thermoplastic material filling the tab recess, wherein the solidified thermoplastic material originates from melted potions of the header module disposed propinquant to the tab channel.

Abstract
A method and apparatus for attaching a pre-formed header module to a hermetically sealed enclosure of an implantable medical device are described. A plurality of upstanding tabs attached to the hermetically sealed enclosure extend into a plurality of corresponding tab channels formed in the header module. The upstanding tabs are inserted into the respective tab channels during seating of the module and enclosure attachment surfaces and effect an initial alignment of the header module with the hermetically sealed enclosure. Each attachment tab has a retention feature such as a recess formed on or in the tab that is designed to receive molten thermoplastic material when ultrasonic energy is applied in the region of the tab channel.
