1. A signal transmission system for transmitting electromagnetic energy, the signal transmission system comprising:

  • a primary coil of wire comprising a plurality of np turns of wire, the primary coil wire having a width and a center, the primary coil having an axis of rotation and where for i=1, 2, . . . , np -1 the end of the ith turn coincides with the beginning of the (i+1)th turn and for i=1, 2, . . . , np the primary coil wire at the beginning of the ith turn has a width 2Rp,i and a center at a perpendicular distance rp,i from the axis of rotation so that rp,i ≧

    Rp,i +Rp,i+m+1 +rp,i+m+1 for at least one i and m; and

a secondary coil of wire wherein the secondary coil is implanted in a human and couples electromagnetic energy from the primary coil to a cochlear stimulator implanted in the human, the secondary coil comprising a plurality of ns turns of wire, the secondary coil wire having a width and a center, the secondary coil having an axis of rotation and where for i=1, 2, . . . , ns -1 the end of the ith turn coincides with the beginning of the (i+1)th turn and for i=1, 2, . . . , ns the secondary coil wire at the beginning of the ith turn has a width 2Rs,i and a center at a perpendicular distance rs,i from the axis of rotation so that rs,i ≧

    Rs,i +Rs,i+m+1 +rs,i+m+1 for at least one i and m.
