Abstract

A baseball pitching machine is disclosed preferably employing a counterrotating wheel type baseball launch subsystem pitching a series of baseballs and a computer controlled system for selecting the type and percentage of pitches, pitcher and batter characteristics, strike zone areas and other parameters to provide a meaningful batting training session. The pitching machine includes a ball transport subsystem including a carousel for receiving and transporting baseballs in sequence to a position adjacent the counter rotating wheels. While being transported, each baseball stops at seam orienting stations where seam rotators rotate the baseball to provide a commanded seam orientation for the particular pitch selected. The baseball is oriented by the ball orienter for insertion in the launch subsystem. A computer allows the selection by the operator of a variety of pitches, random or selected order. The computer has memory capability for storing pitches corresponding to any pitcher'"'"'s typical pitch pattern and the system includes video, audio and data recording to record each batting session. An alignment system is included utilizing a laser light source. A remote control is also provided for the batter or his coach. A manual baseball inserter is disclosed for use with other pitching machines.

Claims

1. A baseball pitching machine including a counterrotating wheel baseball launcher having a plurality of counterrotating wheels each on axles defining respective axes of rotation thereof, variable speed motor means for each counterrotating wheel, motor speed control means, wheel axes adjustment means for the counterrotating wheel baseball launcher and a baseball delivery system for providing a sequence of baseballs to the counterrotating wheel baseball launcher characterized in that:

said baseball delivery system comprises a carrier for receiving a baseball having seams in a predetermined standard seam orientation;

means for advancing said carrier from a baseball receiving position to a baseball launch position near the counterrotating wheel baseball launcher with each baseball on said carrier in the predetermined standard baseball orientation;

first baseball rotating means positioned along the route of travel of said carrier intermediate the baseball receiving position and the baseball launch position for rotating the baseball from its predetermined standard baseball orientation to a selected baseball orientation about one axis while each baseball is on said carrier; and

second baseball rotating means positioned further along the route of travel of said carrier for rotating the baseball about a second axis while the baseball is on said carrier to produce the required baseball orientation to produce a selected pitch when launched.

2. A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 1 wherein said baseball delivery system includes a plurality of cups constituting said carriers for transporting a series of baseballs from the said baseball receiving position to a launch position and for baseball rotation while in their respective cups.

3. A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 2 wherein said cups are located on a carousel mounted for rotation about a vertical axis with the baseballs resting in respective cups and with portions thereof exposed to said first and second baseball rotating means.

4. A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 1 including baseball removing means for removing each baseball from said carrier adjacent to said baseball launcher;

and

baseball insertion means for grasping a baseball after said removing means has removed each baseball from said carrier and operative to insert such a removed baseball between the counterrotating wheels to cause the baseball to be launched.

5. A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 4 wherein said baseball removal means comprises baseball elevating means positioned to raise a baseball from said carrier into an elevated position for grasping by said baseball insertion means.

6. A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 1 including computer means including memory means for storing control signals for each pitch of a series of pitches from said machine including:

required rotational speed of said counterrotating wheels;

axes angles for the counterrotating wheels;

seam position of the baseball to be launched; and

said computer being operationally connected to said baseball counterrotating wheel delivery system to control the speed and rotational axes of said counterrotating wheels and further operational to change the orientation of baseballs from the predetermined standard baseball orientation to the stored delivery baseball orientation before the baseball is in position to be delivered to said counterrotating wheel baseball delivery means.

A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 6 wherein the memory means of said computer stores pitch information for a variety of pitches in preselected percentages and controls said pitching machine to provide a random series of pitches including said variety of pitches in the preselected percentages of the pitches of said series of pitches;

wherein said baseball rotating means is operational to change the baseball orientation from the predetermined standard baseball orientation to the selected pitch baseball orientation during transport on said carrier.

8. A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 6 wherein the memory means of said computer includes:

means for storing identification of a particular pitcher and a typical pitch variety of the pitcher; and

wherein said computer means further includes;

operator controlled input means for selecting a particular pitcher and for controlling said pitching machine to deliver control signals to said pitching machine to provide a series of pitches corresponding to the stored variety of pitches.

9. A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 6 wherein said computer includes operator controlled input means for identifying a batter batting against the machine and for controlling said pitching machine to provide a preselected series of pitches for said batter as determined by the operator.

10. A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 9 including visual recording means for recording the performance of the batter and responsive to said operator controlled input means to identify the recording with the batter identification.

11. A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 6 wherein the memory means of said computer stores signals indicative of either left or right handed pitcher and left or right handed batter operation and said computer controls said pitching machine to adjust the angle of the axes of said counterrotating wheels as a function thereof to provide pitches corresponding to said stored signals.

12. A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 6 wherein said computer includes input means for receiving the input of batter information representative of the batter'"'"'s knee to underarm distance;

the memory means of said computer storing a standard strike zone and including means for adjusting the stored strike zone for such batter as a function of such batter information; and

said computer is responsive to such batter information and adjusted strike zone for limiting the range of control of pitches for the particular batter.

13. A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 1 including a housing generally concealing said baseball launching subsystem from view by the batter and including a launch opening through which the baseballs are pitched toward the batter.

14. A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 1 including indicator means visible to the batter;

and

said indicator means being operated at a predetermined time interval prior to launch of a baseball.

15. A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 1 including alignment means for establishing a reference line for pitches including target means positionable on a baseball plate in a predetermined location;

radiant means secured to the baseball launching subsystem of said baseball pitching machine for direction toward said target means; and

manually controlled means for adjusting the direction of said baseball launching subsystem until the radiant means illuminates said target means whereupon said pitching machine is aligned for launching pitches into a preselected strike zone above the baseball plate.

16. A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 1 including means for inputting dimensions establishing a strike zone for a particular batter whereupon said baseball pitching machine varies the direction of pitches to correspond to the strike zone of the particular batter.

17. A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 1 including means for obscuring the baseball launching subsystem of the pitching machine including door means;

and

means responsive to a pitch delivery for opening said obscuring means before the pitch and closing said obscuring means after the pitch.

18. A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 1 including visual recording means directed toward the plate;

and

wherein said control means is operative to enable said visual recording means responsive to a command to deliver a baseball in order to record a pitch delivery and the batter'"'"'s response.

19. A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 1 including visual recording means directed toward the plate and wherein said pitching machine includes means for introducing identifying data into said visual recording means whereby said visual recording means records not only the visual record of the pitch and the batter'"'"'s response but identifying data, as well.

20. A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 1 including visual recording means directed toward the plate and wherein said control means introduces the commanded pitch identification for successive pitches as the identifying data introduced into said visual recording means whereby the commanded pitch and the visual image of the pitch as well as the batter'"'"'s response are all recorded simultaneously on the record of the visual recording means for subsequent review.

A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 1 including visual recording means directed toward the plate and including a microphone connected to said visual recording means for recording audible commands and comments on the record of said visual recording means during each pitching session.

22. A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 1 wherein said control means includes first control means for introducing pitch selection information into said pitching machine and second control means selectively located at a remote location from said pitching machine including switch means for:

a) ordering a pitch delivery;

b) interrupting a pitch sequence;

or

c) terminating a pitch sequence.

23. A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 22 wherein said pitching machine has audio recording means and said second control means includes a microphone connected to said audio recording means whereby the operator of said second control means may record audio comments or directions while operating said second control means.

24. A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 23 wherein said pitching machine has visual recording means directed toward the plate for recording pitch sequences and the batter'"'"'s response thereto;

wherein said audio recording means is an audio channel of said visual recording means whereby coordinated audio and visual information of a pitch sequence and the batter'"'"'s response may be recorded for later review.

25. A pitching machine in accordance with claim 1 including:

a reference signal generator secured to said pitching machine for directing a reference signal at the plate;

means for indicating when said reference signal generator is directed at a predetermined location at said plate; and

means for calibrating the strike zone of the pitching machine corresponding said indicating means.

26. A pitching machine in accordance with claim 1 including a reference signal generator secured to said pitching machine for directing a reference signal at the plate;

means for indicating when said reference signal generator is directed at a predetermined location at said plate;

means for calibrating the strike zone of the pitching machine corresponding said indicating means; and

means for introducing a value for the distance to the bottom of the strike zone for a particular batter into said calibrating means to adjust the bottom of the strike zone for the batter.

27. A pitching machine in accordance with claim 1 wherein a reference signal generator secured to said pitching machine for directing a reference signal at the plate;

means for indicating when said reference signal generator is directed at a predetermined location at said plate;

means for calibrating the strike zone of the pitching machine corresponding said indicating means; and

said reference signal generator is a laser beam generator.

28. A pitching machine in accordance with claim 1 wherein a reference signal generator secured to said pitching machine for directing a reference signal at the plate;

means for indicating when said reference signal generator is directed at a predetermined location at said plate;

means for calibrating the strike zone of the pitching machine corresponding said indicating means; and

said indicating means comprises an upstanding target for attachment to the plate and whereon the laser beam from said laser beam generator is visible for calibration purposes.

29. A pitching machine in accordance with claim 1 wherein a reference signal generator secured to said pitching machine for directing a reference signal at the plate;

means for indicating when said reference signal generator is directed at a predetermined location at said plate;

means for calibrating the strike zone of the pitching machine corresponding said indicating means;

said reference signal generator is secured to said baseball delivery subassembly; and

said control means is operative to calibrate the baseball delivery subassembly.

30. A baseball pitching machine comprising:

a plurality of subassemblies including;

a baseball transporting subassembly;

a baseball launching subassembly;

control means for said subassemblies;

said baseball transporting subassembly including a baseball carrier for receiving a baseball having seams to be launched with the baseball'"'"'s seams in a predetermined standard starting orientation;

said control means including means for storing baseball seam orientation information for each of a variety of pitches;

means coupled to said baseball transporting means for contacting the baseball while on the carrier and for changing the orientation of a baseball while being transported on said carrier from a baseball receiving station to a baseball launch station;

said control means including;

operator controlled pitch command input means for allowing the selection of each of the stored variety of pitches; and

means for operating said orientation changing means to adjust the orientation of a baseball while on the carrier from the starting orientation to the orientation for a pitch commanded by the operator utilizing said input means prior to a baseball completing its transport by said carrier to said baseball launching subassembly; and

means for lifting each baseball from said carrier when positioned adjacent to said baseball launching subassembly for inserting each baseball into said baseball launching subassembly in the baseball orientation command at said input means by the operator.

A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 30 wherein said control means includes means for storing launch direction information for a variety of pitches to be thrown and means for changing the launch direction of said baseball launching subassembly in accordance with the pitch selection selected at said input means.

A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 30 wherein said control means includes means for storing launch speed information for a variety of pitches to be thrown and including means for changing the speed of said baseball launching subassembly in accordance with the pitch selection selected at said input means.

33. A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 30 wherein said baseball transporting subassembly includes a plurality of baseball supports for holding and transporting individual baseballs to said baseball launching subassembly;

and

including baseball rotating means positioned to engage an exposed portion of each baseball while in their respective support to rotate individual baseballs in their respective support to a baseball seam orientation corresponding to a command from said control subassembly.

A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 33 wherein said baseball supports comprise open bottom cup-shaped holders for individual baseballs and said baseball rotating means comprise cam surfaces for engaging the surface of baseballs while supported in said cup-shaped holders and means for powering said cam surfaces to rotate a baseball while in said cup-shaped holder in accordance with a command from said control subassembly.

35. A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 34 wherein said cam surfaces are positioned to provide orthoginal rotation of a baseball while held in its cup-shaped holder.

36. A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 30 wherein said baseball launching subassembly comprises a pair of counter rotating wheels rotating on parallel axes with a space therebetween for receiving and launching a baseball and means for rotating said wheels at controllable speeds;

and

said baseball transporting subassembly including means for elevating a seam oriented baseball into the space between said counter rotating wheels and including means for grasping a baseball in its seam oriented position and for inserting each seam oriented baseball between said pair of counterrotating wheels to allow the baseball to be launched with the selected baseball seam orientation.

37. A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 36 wherein said counterrotating wheels are mounted on a common angularly adjustable support for changing the angular orientation of the wheels and wherein said elevating means is mounted on the support for said carrier and movable adjacent to the space between the counterrotating wheels and said grasping means is mounted on said common angularly adjustable support whereby each baseball is insertable into the space between the counterrotating wheels with the seams oriented relative to the angular orientation of the wheels.

38. A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 37 including means for transferring a baseball from said baseball transporting subassembly to said baseball launching subassembly by transporting each baseball to a predetermined position with respect to the axis of rotation of said common angularly adjustable support and wherein said baseball grasping means is mounted for movement along said axis of rotation whereby each baseball is insertable between said counterrotating wheels with the commanded baseball seam orientation between said counterrotating wheels.

39. A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 30 including a housing generally concealing said baseball launching subsystem from view by the batter and including a launch opening through which the baseballs are pitched toward the batter.

40. A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 30 including indicator means visible to the batter;

and

said indicator means being operated at a predetermined time interval prior to launch of a baseball.

41. A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 30 including alignment means for establishing a reference line for pitches including target means positionable on a baseball plate in a predetermined location;

radiant means secured to the baseball launching subsystem of said baseball pitching machine for direction toward said target means; and

manually controlled means for adjusting the direction of said baseball launching subsystem until the radiant means illuminates said target means whereupon said pitching machine is aligned for launching pitches into a preselected strike zone above the baseball plate.

42. A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 30 including means for inputting dimensions establishing a strike zone for a particular batter whereupon said baseball pitching machine varies the direction of pitches to correspond to the strike zone of the particular batter.

43. A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 30 including means for obscuring the baseball launching subsystem of the pitching machine including door means;

and

means responsive to a pitch delivery for opening said obscuring means before the pitch and closing said obscuring means after the pitch.

44. A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 30 including visual recording means directed toward the plate;

and

wherein said control means is operative to enable said visual recording means responsive to a command to deliver a baseball in order to record a pitch delivery and the batter'"'"'s response.

45. A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 30 including visual recording means directed toward the plate and wherein said pitching machine includes means for introducing identifying data into said visual recording means whereby said visual recording means records not only the visual record of the pitch and the batter'"'"'s response but identifying data, as well.

46. A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 30 including visual recording means directed toward the plate and wherein said control means introduces the commanded pitch identification for successive pitches as the identifying data introduced into said visual recording means whereby the commanded pitch and the visual image of the pitch as well as the batter'"'"'s response are all recorded simultaneously on the record of the visual recording means for subsequent review.

47. A baseball pitching machine in accordance with claim 30 including visual recording means directed toward the plate and including a microphone connected to said visual recording means for recording audible commands and comments on the record of said visual recording means during each pitching session.

48. A pitching machine in accordance with claim 30 including:

a reference signal generator secured to said pitching machine for directing a reference signal at the plate;

means for indicating when said reference signal generator is directed at a predetermined location at said plate; and

means for calibrating the strike zone of the pitching machine corresponding said indicating means.

49. A pitching machine in accordance with claim 30 including a reference signal generator secured to said pitching machine for directing a reference signal at the plate;

means for indicating when said reference signal generator is directed at a predetermined location at said plate;

means for calibrating the strike zone of the pitching machine corresponding said indicating means; and

means for introducing a value for the distance to the bottom of the strike zone for a particular batter into said calibrating means to adjust the bottom of the strike zone for the batter.

50. A pitching machine in accordance with claim 30 wherein a reference signal generator secured to said pitching machine for directing a reference signal at the plate;

means for indicating when said reference signal generator is directed at a predetermined location at said plate;

means for calibrating the strike zone of the pitching machine corresponding said indicating means; and

said reference signal generator is a laser beam generator.

51. A pitching machine in accordance with claim 30 wherein a reference signal generator secured to said pitching machine for directing a reference signal at the plate;

means for indicating when said reference signal generator is directed at a predetermined location at said plate;

means for calibrating the strike zone of the pitching machine corresponding said indicating means; and

said indicating means comprises an upstanding target for attachment to the plate and whereon the laser beam from said laser beam generator is visible for calibration purposes.

52. A pitching machine in accordance with claim 30 wherein a reference signal generator secured to said pitching machine for directing a reference signal at the plate;

means for indicating when said reference signal generator is directed at a predetermined location at said plate;

means for calibrating the strike zone of the pitching machine corresponding said indicating means;

said reference signal generator is secured to said baseball delivery subassembly; and

said control means is operative to calibrate the baseball
