Abstract

An optical scanner assembly for exposing an image on a piece of photosensitive film positioned within an internal drum type exposure assembly. The optical scanner assembly is part of a laser imaging system suitable for use in a medical imaging system. The optical scanner assembly includes a laser mechanism for producing a laser beam representative of the image to be exposed on the photosensitive film. A first lens system is provided for shaping and focusing the laser beam in a first direction, including a long, flexible cylinder lens. A second lens system is provided for shaping and focusing the laser beam in a second direction, including a second cylinder lens oriented generally perpendicular to the long, flexible cylinder lens. A scanning and directing system is provided for directing the laser beam and scanning the laser beam across the photosensitive film in an image-wise pattern, including a rotating scanner mechanism, wherein the long, flexible cylinder lens is located between the rotating scanner mechanism and the photosensitive film.

Claims

1. An optical scanner assembly for exposing an image on a piece of photosensitive film positioned within an internal drum type exposure assembly, wherein the optical scanner assembly is part of a laser imaging system suitable for use in a medical imaging system, the optical scanner assembly comprising:

a laser mechanism for producing a laser beam representative of the image to be exposed on the photosensitive film, the laser beam defining an optical path between the laser mechanism and the photosensitive film;

a first lens system positioned along the optical path for shaping and focusing the laser beam in a first direction, the first lens system including a first cylinder lens and a long, flexible cylinder lens, wherein the long, flexible cylinder lens is flexed to a shape which corresponds to the shape of the photosensitive film;

a second lens system positioned along the optical path for shaping and focusing the laser beam in a second direction, the second lens system including a second cylinder lens oriented generally perpendicular to the first cylinder lens; and

a scanning and directing system for directing the laser beam and scanning the laser beam across the photosensitive film in an image-wise pattern, including a rotating scanner mechanism;

wherein the first cylinder lens and the second cylinder lens are located between the laser assembly and the rotating scanner mechanism, and wherein the long, flexible cylinder lens is located between the rotating scanner mechanism and the photosensitive film.

2. The optical scanner assembly of claim 1, further comprising a unibody variable density attenuation mechanism positioned along the optical path between the laser assembly and the rotating scanner mirror, wherein the unibody variable density attenuation mechanism is a linear density wedge.

3. The optical scanner assembly of claim 1, wherein the first cylinder lens and the second cylinder lens are plano-convex cylinder lens.

4. The optical scanner assembly of claim 1, wherein the long, flexible cylinder lens is a plano-convex cylinder lens.

The optical scanner assembly of claim 1, wherein the rotating scanner mechanism includes a rotating two-sided mirror for directing the laser beam through the long flexible lens at the photosensitive film, and for radially scanning the laser beam across the photosensitive film in the image-wise pattern.

6. The optical scanner assembly of claim 5, wherein the rotating two-sided mirror scans the laser beam in a 180 degree arc through the long, flexible lens across the photosensitive film.

7. The optical scanner assembly of claim 5, wherein each side of the rotating two-sided mirror scans an image scan line across the photosensitive film.

8. The optical scanner assembly of claim 5, wherein the rotating scanner mechanism operates in a dual scan mode such that both sides of the rotating two-sided mirror scan the same scan line across the photosensitive film to form one image scan line.

9. The optical scanner assembly of claim 5, wherein the rotating scanner mechanism further includes:

a mechanism mechanically coupled to the two-sided mirror for rotating the rotating two-sided mirror at a desired rate.

10. The optical scanner assembly of claim 5, further comprising a folding mirror for directing the laser beam at the rotating two-sided mirror.

The optical scanner assembly of claim 10, wherein the folding mirror receives the laser beam traveling in a first direction from the second cylinder lens and redirects the laser beam in a second direction which is substantially perpendicular to the first direction, at the rotating two-sided scanning mirror.

12. The optical scanner assembly of claim 1, wherein the first cylinder lens shapes and focuses the laser beam in the cross-scan direction.

13. The optical scanner assembly of claim 1, wherein the distance between the first cylinder lens and the rotating two-sided mirror is equal to the focal length of the first cylinder lens.

14. The optical scanner assembly of claim 1, wherein the first cylinder lens operates as a beamsplitter in a laser beam feedback system.

The optical scanner assembly of claim 14, further comprising a photodetector, wherein the first cylinder lens is tilted relative to the optical path for providing a laser beam reflected portion which is directed at the photodetector, and wherein in response to the laser beam reflected portion, the photodetector provides an output signal representative of the laser beam power.

16. The optical scanner assembly of claim 1, wherein the second cylinder lens is tilted relative to the optical path for directing a reflected portion of the laser beam at a light absorbing surface.

17. The optical scanner assembly of claim 1, wherein the third cylinder lens is located at the midpoint between the rotating two-sided mirror and the photosensitive film.

18. The optical scanner assembly of claim 17, wherein the distance between the rotating scanning mirror and the long, flexible lens is equal to two times the focal length of the long, flexible cylinder lens.

19. The optical scanner assembly of claim 1, wherein the second cylinder lens shapes and focuses the laser beam in the in-scan direction.

20. The optical scanner assembly of claim 1, wherein the distance between the second cylinder lens and the photosensitive film is equal to the focal length of the second cylinder lens.

The optical scanner assembly of claim 1, wherein the laser beam is directed by the rotating scanner mechanism at the photosensitive film at a small deviation from an angle perpendicular to the photosensitive film, and wherein a reflected portion of the laser beam is directed at a light absorbing surface.

An optical scanner assembly for exposing an image on a piece of photosensitive film positioned within an internal drum type exposure assembly, wherein the optical scanner assembly is part of a laser imaging system suitable for use in a medical imaging system, the optical scanner assembly comprising:

a laser mechanism for producing a laser beam representative of the image to be exposed on the photosensitive film, the laser beam defining an optical path between the laser mechanism and the photosensitive film;

a first lens system positioned along the optical path for shaping and focusing the laser beam in a first direction, the first lens system including a long, flexible cylinder lens;

a second lens system positioned along the optical path for shaping and focusing the laser beam in a second direction, the second lens system including a second cylinder lens oriented generally perpendicular to the long, flexible cylinder lens; and

a scanning and directing system for directing the laser beam and scanning the laser beam across the photosensitive film in an image-wise pattern, including a rotating scanner mechanism;

wherein the second cylinder lens is located between the laser assembly and the rotating scanner mechanism, and wherein the long, flexible cylinder lens is located between the rotating scanner mechanism and the photosensitive film.

23. The assembly of claim 22, wherein the first lens system further includes a spherical lens.
