1. A subscriber unit comprising:

  • a transceiver for communicating with a first communication system and a second communication system and for scanning frequency channels of the first communication system servicing a wide area at a relatively high power level and for scanning frequency channels of the second communication system servicing a local area at a relatively low power level, wherein at least one of the frequency channels of the second communication system has the same frequency as a frequency channel of the first communication system; and

    a processor for performing the steps of;

    tuning the transceiver to at least one frequency channel of the frequency channels when the subscriber unit is within the local area of the second communication system;

    determining a measure of interference on at least one frequency channel of the frequency channels responsive to the step of tuning; and

    assigning the at least one frequency channel of the frequency channels of the first communication system to the transceiver for communicating with the second communication system when the subscriber unit is within the local area of the second communication system responsive the step of determining.
