1. A portable distance tracking system for mounting on a cart that travels on a playing field having at least one landmark, comprising:

  • A. a memory element including means for storing a digital representation of the playing field, the digital representation having digitally encoded positional information defining the landmark relative to other positions within the field;

    B. accelerometer means, including at least two rotational accelerometers and a translational accelerometer, for determining translational and rotational accelerations and for generating data representative of the accelerations;

    C. a data processor, coupled to the memory element and to the accelerometer means, including means for (i) compensating the data for gravitational acceleration forces by determining a pitch angle of the cart, (ii) integrating the compensated acceleration to determine a distance traveled on the field relative to an initial position, (iii) determining a position on the field from the distance traveled, and (iv) correlating the position to the positional information within the memory element to determine the distance to the landmark as a function of the position; and

    D. a display, coupled to the data processor, including means for displaying the distance to the player.
