1. A method for delivering a neurotrophic factor to the striatum of a mammalian host, the method comprising implanting at least one biocompatible capsule into the striatum of the host, each capsule comprising(a) a core comprising living mammalian cells secreting said neurotrophic factor, the cells having been transfected with a recombinant DNA molecule comprising a DNA sequence encoding said neutrotrophic factor operably linked to a promoter and wherein said cells stably express said neurotrophic factor;

  • and(b) a biocompatible jacket surrounding the core, the jacket comprising a permselective membrane permitting passage of the neurotrophic factor thereacross into the host.
