Abstract

A flat-panel field emission display comprises a luminescent faceplate, a rigid backplate, and an interposed or sandwiched emitter or cathode plate. A positioning spacer or connector ridge is formed on the rear surface of the faceplate to space the cathode plate a fixed distance behind the faceplate. A peripheral seal is formed between the faceplate and the backplate. The faceplate, backplate, and peripheral seal define an evacuated internal space which contains the cathode plate. The backplate is spaced behind the cathode plate to create a rearward vacuum space in which a getter is located.

Claims

1. A flat-panel field emission display comprising:

a faceplate having a rear surface, the rear surface being coated with a luminescent material;

a connector ridge on the rear surface of the faceplate;

a cathode plate which is positioned rearwardly from the faceplate against the connector ridge, the cathode plate having a front emitter surface which faces the rear surface of the faceplate, the connector ridge establishing a spacing between the rear surface of the faceplate and the front emitter surface of the cathode plate;

a plurality of cathode plate conductors on the front emitter surface of the cathode plate;

a plurality of faceplate terminal conductors on the rear surface of the faceplate, the terminal conductors having connecting portions which overlie the connector ridge;

a plurality of conductive bonds interposed between the faceplate terminal conductors and the cathode plate conductors to form individual electrical connections therebetween, the faceplate terminal conductors providing accessible electrical connections to the cathode plate conductors.

2. A flat-panel field emission display as recited in claim 1 wherein the conductive bonds comprise flip-chip bonds interposed between the terminal conductors and the cathode plate conductors.

A flat-panel field emission display as recited in claim 1 and further comprising a plurality of bond wire stubs bonded either to the terminal conductors or to the cathode plate conductors, the bond wire stubs having projecting tails of bond wire which are interposed between the terminal conductors and the cathode plate conductors to form the individual conductive bonds.

A flat-panel field emission display as recited in claim 1 and further comprising a plurality of bond wire interconnections which electrically connect between the connecting portions of individual terminal conductors over the connector ridge and portions of the face plate terminal conductors on the faceplate rear surface.

5. A flat-panel field emission display, comprising:

a luminescent faceplate having a rear surface;

a cathode plate having a front surface which is spaced rearwardly from the rear surface of the luminescent faceplate;

an emitter matrix formed on the front surface of the cathode plate facing the luminescent faceplate;

a backplate spaced from the cathode plate creating a rearward vacuum space behind the cathode plate;

a peripheral seal between the faceplate and the backplate;

the faceplate, backplate, and peripheral seal defining an evacuated space which contains the cathode plate;

a positioning spacer on the rear surface of the luminescent faceplate;

a connector ridge on the rear surface of the luminescent faceplate;

a plurality of conductive traces overlying the rear surface of the luminescent faceplate and extending over the elevated connector ridge; and

the cathode plate being positioned against the positioning spacer, the positioning spacer establishing a spacing between the faceplate and the cathode plate, the cathode plate being positioned over the connector ridge for electrical contact between the cathode plate and portions of the conductive traces extending over the connector ridge.

6. A flat-panel field emission display as recited in claim 5 and further comprising a plurality of conductive bonds interposed between the conductive traces and the cathode plate to form individual electrical connections therebetween.

A flat-panel field emission display as recited in claim 5 and further comprising a plurality of conductive flip-chip bonds interposed between the conductive traces and the cathode plate to form individual electrical connections therebetween, the conductive flip-chip bonds forming bonded connections between the faceplate and the cathode plate to mount the cathode plate to the faceplate.

8. A flat-panel field emission display as recited in claim 5 wherein the conductive traces have base portions which overlie the faceplate and connecting portions which overlie the connector ridge;

the flat-panel field emission display further comprising a plurality of bond wire interconnections which electrically connect between the base portions and the connecting portions of individual conductive traces.

A flat-panel field emission display as recited in claim 5 and further comprising a plurality of bond wire stubs bonded either to the conductive traces or to the cathode plate, the bond wire stubs having projecting tails of bond wire which are interposed between and bonded to the conductive traces and the cathode plate to form conductive bonds therebetween.

10. A flat-panel field emission display as recited in claim 5 wherein the conductive traces have base portions which overlie the faceplate and connecting portions which extend over the connector ridge;

the flat-panel field emission display further comprising;

a plurality of bond wire interconnections which electrically connect between the base portions and the connecting portions of individual conductive traces; and

a plurality of conductive flip-chip bonds interposed between the connecting portions of the conductive traces and the cathode plate to form individual conductive bonds therebetween.

11. A flat-panel field emission display as recited in claim 5 wherein the conductive traces have base portions which overlie the faceplate and connecting portions which overlie the connector ridge, the flat-panel field emission display further comprising:

a plurality of bond wire interconnections which electrically connect between the base portions and the connecting portions of individual conductive traces; and

a plurality of bond wire stubs bonded either to the conductive traces or to the cathode plate, the bond wire stubs having projecting tails of bond wire which are interposed between and bonded to the conductive trace connecting portions and the cathode plate to form conductive bonds therebetween.

12. A flat-panel field emission display as recited in claim 5 wherein the positioning spacer is formed by the connector ridge.

13. A flat-panel field emission display comprising:

a faceplate having a rear surface;

a cathode plate rearwardly adjacent the faceplate, the cathode plate having a front emitter surface which is spaced from the faceplate rear surface;

a plurality of emitters on the front emitter surface of the cathode plate;

a plurality of cathode plate conductors on the front emitter surface of the cathode plate, the cathode plate conductors being electrically connected to the emitters of the cathode plate;

a plurality of faceplate terminal conductors on the rear surface of the faceplate;

the faceplate terminal conductors being connected to the cathode plate conductors of the cathode plate, the faceplate terminal conductors providing accessible electrical connections to the emitters of the cathode plate;

a connector ridge on the rear surface of the faceplate, the terminal conductors having connecting portions which overlie the connector ridge; and

a plurality of conductive bonds interposed between the terminal conductor connecting portions and the cathode plate conductors to form individual electrical connections therebetween.

14. A flat-panel field emission display comprising:

a faceplate having a rear surface;

a cathode plate rearwardly adjacent the faceplate, the cathode plate having a front emitter surface which is spaced from the faceplate rear surface;

a plurality of emitters on the front emitter surface of the cathode plate;

a plurality of cathode plate conductors on the front emitter surface of the cathode plate, the cathode plate conductors being electrically connected to the emitters of the cathode plate;

a plurality of faceplate terminal conductors on the rear surface of the faceplate;

the faceplate terminal conductors being connected to the cathode plate conductors of the cathode plate, the faceplate terminal conductors providing accessible electrical connections to the emitters of the cathode plate,

a connector ridge on the rear surface of the faceplate, the terminal conductors having base portions which overlie the faceplate and having connecting portions which overlie the connector ridge;

a plurality of conductive bonds interposed between the terminal conductor connecting portions and the cathode plate conductors to form individual electrical connections therebetween; and

a plurality of bond wire interconnections which electrically connect between the base portions and the connecting portions of individual terminal conductors.

15. The flat-panel field emission display comprising

a faceplate having a rear surface;

a cathode plate rearwardly adjacent the faceplate rear surface, the cathode plate having a plurality of emitters facing the faceplate rear surface, the cathode plate comprising a plurality of cathode plate conductors in electrical connection with the emitters;

a plurality of faceplate terminal conductors formed over the rear surface of the faceplate;

the cathode plate conductors and the faceplate conductors being electrically interconnected; and

an elongated interconnecting ridge formed over the faceplate rear surface, the faceplate terminal conductors being formed over the ridge.
