1. A kit for collecting a sample from a blood vessel of a patient that can be analyzed to determine a physiological function, comprising the following components packaged together:

  • an elongated vascular sampling catheter having a proximal portion that remains outside the body and a distal portion that can be located in the blood vessel, said distal portion including an expandable portion that can be selectively expanded to larger diameters and contracted to smaller diameters, said expandable portion including a swellable hydrogel polymer composed of a cross-linked polymer matrix capable of receiving substantial amounts of said sample, said hydrogel polymer comprising a probe which binds to and retains a target bodily component, andan apparatus for facilitating analysis of said sample to determine the physiological function.
