Abstract

A method for manufacturing a thin film magnetic head slider having a media opposing surface which is adapted to be opposed to a recording medium, includes the steps of forming on a sacrificial layer, on a substrate, in such a manner that the sacrificial layer has a surface including steps for forming the media opposing surface having at least one rail, providing a slider material on the surface of the sacrificial layer, and removing the sacrificial layer and the substrate from the slider. A tracking mechanism or loading/unloading mechanism can be provided on the slider. An electrostatic actuator suitable for driving such a mechanism includes a stationary section having a plurality of teeth parallel to each other, a movable section having a plurality of teeth parallel to the teeth of the stationary section, a support spring for supporting the movable section so that the movable section can be moved with respect to the stationary section in the tooth width direction. A drive force generator moves the movable section to a position at which an electrostatic attraction force in the tooth width direction generated when a voltage is impressed between the teeth of the stationary section and those of the movable section, is balanced with the elastic force of the head suspension.

Claims

1. A method for manufacturing a thin film magnetic head slider having a media opposing surface which is adapted to be opposed to a recording medium, said method comprising the steps of:

forming a sacrificial layer on a substrate, said sacrificial layer including a tapered surface for forming at least part of said media opposing surface;

forming an air bearing layer on said sacrificial layer, said air bearing layer having an air inlet portion, said air inlet portion being formed on said tapered surface so that said air inlet portion has a tapered shape;

forming a slider body, a head element and terminal pads for said head elements on said air bearing layer; and

separating said slider body from said substrate by removing said sacrificial layer.

2. A method as set forth in claim 1, said slider forming step comprising the steps of:

forming an air bearing layer on said surface of the substrate, or on said surface of the sacrificial layer; and

forming a slider body and a plurality of terminals both made of electrically conductive material on said air bearing layer.

3. A method as set forth in claim 2, wherein said plurality of terminals are arranged in a central area of the slider and said slider body is arranged in a peripheral area around said plurality of terminals.

4. A method as set forth in claim 2, wherein gaps are defined between said plurality of terminals and between said terminals and slider body, and said gaps are filled with insulating material.

5. A method as set forth in claim 2, wherein said slider body and said plurality of terminals are simultaneously formed by plating.

6. A method as set forth in claim 1, wherein said slider is mounted on a head suspension made of a leaf spring, and then said substrate, or said sacrificial layer and substrate, is removed from said slider.

7. A method as set forth in claim 6, wherein both said slider body and said plurality of terminals are bonded to said head suspension to mount said slider on said head suspension.

A method as set forth in claim 6, wherein said head suspension has first and second, opposite surfaces, said slider body is bonded to said first surface of the head suspension to mount said slider on said head suspension and, on the other hand, said plurality of terminals are wire-bonded to said second, opposite surface of the head suspension.

9. A method as set forth in claim 2, wherein said air bearing surface layer is selected from a group of SiO₂, Al₂ O₃, and carbon, and said conductive material for forming said slider body and said plurality of terminals is selected from a group of Ni, NiFe, Au and Cu.

10. A method as set forth in claim 1, wherein said slider has a substantially polygonal shape when it is seen from a side of said media opposing surface, so that a leading end of said polygonal shape is provided at respective sides thereof with obtuse angle portions.

11. A method as set forth in claim 10, wherein said slider has its length of about 0.8 mm or below 0.8 mm along the moving direction of said recording medium.

12. A method for manufacturing a thin film magnetic head slider having a media opposing surface which is adapted to be opposed to a recording medium, said method comprising the steps of:

forming a sacrificial layer on a substrate, so that said sacrificial layer has a surface including steps for forming said media opposing surface with at least one rail;

providing a slider material on said surface of the sacrificial layer; and

removing said sacrificial layer and said substrate from said slider,

wherein said at least one rail has at least one tapered portion at a leading side of the slider, and a thickness of said sacrificial layer or an underlayer thereof is gradually increased at portions thereof corresponding to said tapered portions of the rails.

13. A method as set forth in claim 12, wherein the thickness of said sacrificial layer or said underlayer thereof is gradually increased by dry-etching said sacrificial layer or said underlayer using a mask consisting of a tapered photoresist.

14. A method as set forth in claim 12, wherein the thickness of said sacrificial layer or said underlayer thereof is gradually increased by forming a tapered photoresist or polyimide and hardening the same.
