  • culturing a population of human hematopoietic cells comprising stem cells or committed progenitor cells in a stromal conditioned medium in the absence of stromal cells, wherein the medium comprises an effective added amount of one or more cytokines selected from the group consisting of MIP-1α

    , IL-3, SCF, BB10010 and PF-4, so that the ability of the stem cells to self-replicate and differentiate is maintained or the ability of the committed progenitors to expand and differentiate is maintained.
