Snap-on mounting attachment and fastener stud for mounting an airbag inflator to a vehicle support
First Claim
1. In a snap-on mounting attachment for securing an airbag inflator module having a base plate to a support provided on a motor vehicle, the snap-on mounting attachment including:
- at least one fastener stud having a longitudinal axis and including a main body portion having securing means at one end adapted to secure said fastener stud to said base plate of the airbag module, said main body portion having mounted thereon a sleeve of generally cylindrical profile terminating in a reduced diameter end, and yieldable, outwardly-biased holding means normally extending angularly outwardly from said main body portion having distal tips adapted to engage a snap receptor on the support and to yieldably retract into the reduced diameter end of the sleeve when said holding means are moved inwardly toward the longitudinal axis of said fastener stud.

Abstract
A snap-on mounting attachment is provided for securing an airbag inflator module having a base plate to the steering wheel of a motor vehicle. The mounting attachment includes two fastener studs extending rearwardly from the base plate, each fastener stud having a yieldable holding barb. Two capture brackets are mounted to the spokes of the steering wheel, and each capture bracket holds a snap receptor in floating encapturement therein, i.e., with a limited range of lateral and vertical movement. The snap receptors each have a metal ring embedded in a polymer shell and define a stud receiving opening therethrough with the metal ring defining a lip engaged by the holding barb of the fastener stud. Bias stops between the base plate and the steering wheel take up slack in the mounting attachment and eliminate rattles, and the polymer shell of the snap receptors also minimizes rattles. The steering wheel and airbag inflator module have complementary covers, and the floating encapturement permits alignment of the covers.

12. A fastener stud having a longitudinal axis and comprising:
-
a main body portion terminating in a threaded shaft portion and having a sleeve of generally cylindrical profile terminating in a reduced diameter end mounted thereon; and said main body portion having yieldable, outwardly-biased resilient means mounted thereon extending angularly outwardly therefrom terminating in distal tips movable from a first position normally extending away from said main body portion to a second position disposed adjacent said sleeve and wherein said resilient means are adapted to yieldably retract into the profile reduced diameter end of the sleeve when said resilient means are moved inwardly toward the longitudinal axis of said stud. - View Dependent Claims (13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20)
