- tuner means for receiving television signals on a plurality of television channels, said tuner means selecting a particular television channel from said plurality of television channels in response to a control signal;
control means for generating said control signal;
means, coupled to said control means, for entering data in response to operation by a user; and
memory means coupled to said control means for storing data;
said control means programming said VCR to record a desired television show at a future date, at a specific time, on a specific channel, according to a first operating mode or a second operating mode;
said user programming said videocassette recorder according to said first system by entering data other than separate entries of specific date, specific time, and specific channel information;
said user programming said VCR to record said desired television show according to said second operating mode by entering separate entries of specific date, time, and channel information;
said control means storing in said memory means data indicative of which of said first and second operating modes was most recently used for programming said VCR; and
on-screen display means for automatically generating signals for producing a first display unique to said first operating mode in response to a user-entered command to program said VCR by said means for entering data when said data stored in said memory means indicates said first operating mode was most recently used for programming said VCR and automatically generating a second display unique to said second operating mode in response to a user-entered command to program said VCR when said data stored in said memory means indicates said second operating mode was most recently used for programming said VCR.
