1. A method for determining an indexing protocol for a document, the method comprising the steps of:
- retrieving a first copy of the document at a first time;
retrieving a second copy of the document at a second time at a time interval subsequent to said first time;
comparing said first copy of the document to said second copy of the document and identifying in said step of comparing, the extent to which said first copy and said second copy differ; and
adjusting said time interval for a subsequent retrieval of said document in accordance with the results of the substep of identifying.

Abstract
A method more efficiently indexes dynamic documents. The method adjusts the frequency with which dynamic documents are retrieved taking into account the extent to which the document varies between its most recent retrievals. Furthermore, the method selects portions of the document to be indexed based on the substance of the differences between recently retrieved copies.

6. A method for determining a frequency for indexing a dynamic document, the method comprising the steps of:
-
retrieving a first copy of the document at a first time; at a second time, a predetermined time interval after said first time, retrieving a second copy of the document; identifying any differences between said first copy and said second copy; and when differences exist, determining a new predetermined time interval which is less than said predetermined time interval; and retrieving a third copy of the document at a third time which corresponds to the new predetermined time interval after said second time. - View Dependent Claims (7, 8, 9, 10)

-
retrieving a first copy of the document at a first time; at second time, a predetermined time interval after said first time, retrieving a second copy of the document; identifying any differences between said first copy and said second copy; and when differences exist, quantifying the identified differences; selecting a portion of said document for indexing in accordance with the quantification of identified differences; indexing the selected portion of said document; and determining a new predetermined time interval. - View Dependent Claims (12, 13, 14)
