Abstract
A system for deriving multiple channels from four-wire residential telephone wiring. The invention provides two voice channels and two, or more, data channels on common residential telephone wiring. The voice channels occupy a normal telephone bandwidth, in the range of approximately zero Hz to 3500 Hz. Within this channel placement, ordinary telephonic devices can use the channels, without a requirement of frequency-shifting. Above these voice-channel frequencies, data channels are provided, for internal communication within the residence.

5. For a building having (A) telephone cabling containing at least four wires and (B) five or more telephonic devices connected to the cabling, a communication system comprising:
-
a) means for providing two data channels on the cabling, by which the telephonic devices can communicate data with each other, said data including information which is distinct from control signals used by the devices, and b) means for providing two voice channels on the cabling, by which the telephonic devices can communicate voice information with each other, and with devices external to the residence, wherein a data channel is available on the cabling wherever a voice channel is available.

8. For telephone wiring in a building, containing two or more pairs of wires, which is serviced by external cabling leading to a telephone central office, a communication system comprising:
-
a) apparatus for providing a voice channel on each pair of wires, for communication i) within the building, and ii) with the telephone central office; b) apparatus for providing a data channel which carries user-supplied data on each pair of wires, for communication within the building, said data channel being available on a pair wherever a voice channel is available; and c) a filter for blocking the data channels from communicating with the telephone central office. - View Dependent Claims (9, 10, 11)
