Abstract

A leaky waveguide antenna array that receives and/or transmits electromagnetic signals includes a plurality of radiation waveguides disposed in parallel to each other on a surface plane to form the antenna array. A feed waveguide is located below the surface plane and provides an electromagnetic signal to the plurality of radiation waveguides and/or receives a plurality of electromagnetic signals from the plurality of radiation waveguides and provides a composite electromagnetic signal at an output of the feed waveguide. Each of the plurality of radiation waveguides has a waveguide axis and includes a plurality of apertures arranged in a direction of the waveguide axis. The feed waveguide includes a first section of waveguide having a first end connected to an input/output port. The first section of waveguide has a height substantially the same as the height of each of the plurality of radiation waveguides and the first section of waveguide has a second end coupled to a first junction point. The first junction point transitions from the first section of waveguide to a second section of waveguide and a third section of waveguide that each have a height that is substantially half of the height of the first section of waveguide. The second section of waveguide transitions with an upward sloping ramp to the substantially half height of the first section of waveguide. The third section of waveguide transitions with a downward sloping ramp to the substantially half height of the first section of waveguide. The third section of waveguide is substantially a mirror image of the second section of waveguide. The feed waveguide also includes a septum connected to vertical walls of the first, second and third sections of waveguide which aids in the transition from the height of the first section of the waveguide to the height of the second section and the third section of waveguide. Each of the second section of waveguide and the third section of waveguide are coupled to a corresponding first signal port and second signal port of the feed waveguide. Each of the first signal port and the second signal port are coupled to a corresponding one of the plurality of radiation waveguides.

Claims

1. A leaky waveguide antenna array, comprising:

a plurality of radiation waveguides disposed in parallel to each other to form the antenna array, each of the plurality radiation waveguides having a height, a waveguide axis and having a plurality of apertures arranged in a direction of the waveguide axis; and

a feed waveguide that provides a composite wave of electromagnetic waves received by the plurality of radiation waveguides, wherein the feed waveguide includes a first section of waveguide having a first end connected to an input/output port of the feed waveguide, having a height substantially the same as the height of each of the plurality of radiation waveguides and having a second end coupled to a first junction point, wherein at the first junction point the first section of waveguide transitions to a second section of waveguide and a third section of waveguide that each have a height that is substantially half of the height of the first section of waveguide and wherein the second section of waveguide transitions with an upward disposed ramp to the substantially half height and the third section of waveguide transitions to the substantially half height with a downward sloping ramp such that the second section of waveguide is a mirror image of the third section of waveguide, the feed waveguide also including a septum connected to vertical walls of the first, second and third sections of the feed waveguide that aids in the transition from the height of the first section of the feed waveguide to the height of the second section and the third section of the feed waveguide, and wherein the each of the second section and the third section of the feed waveguide are coupled to a corresponding one of the plurality of radiation waveguides.

2. The leaky waveguide antenna array as claimed in claim 1, wherein the antenna array and the feed waveguide are located in a same plane.

The leaky waveguide antenna array as claimed in claim 2, wherein the plurality of radiation waveguides include at least eight waveguides disposed in parallel and the feed waveguide includes at least an eighth section, a ninth, a tenth section, an eleventh section, a twelfth section, a thirteenth section, a fourteenth section, and a fifteenth section of waveguide each having a height that is substantially half of the height of the first section of waveguide, the fourth section of waveguide transitioning to the eighth section of waveguide with a downward sloping ramp and transitioning to the ninth section of waveguide with an upward sloping ramp such that the eighth section of waveguide is a mirror image of the ninth section of waveguide, the fifth section of waveguide transitioning to the tenth section of waveguide with a downward sloping ramp and transitioning to the eleventh section of waveguide with an upward sloping ramp such that the tenth section of waveguide is a mirror image of the eleventh section of waveguide, the sixth section of waveguide transitioning to the twelfth section of waveguide with a downward sloping ramp and transitioning to the thirteenth section of waveguide with an upward sloping ramp such that the twelfth section of waveguide is a mirror image of the thirteenth section of waveguide, the seventh section of waveguide transitioning to the fourteenth section of waveguide with a downward sloping ramp and transitioning to the fifteenth section of waveguide with an upward sloping ramp such that the fourteenth section of waveguide is a mirror image of the fifteenth section of waveguide, each of the eighth, ninth, tenth, eleventh, twelfth, thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth sections of waveguide being coupled to a corresponding one of the at least eight waveguides so that the feed waveguide forms at least a one-to-eight feed waveguide that feeds the at least eight waveguides of the antenna array.

The leaky waveguide antenna array as claimed in claim 1, wherein the antenna array is located above a first plane and the feed waveguide is located below the first plane, and further including a plurality of E-plane bends, each E-plane bend coupling a corresponding signal port of the feed waveguide to a respective radiation waveguide.

The leaky waveguide antenna array as claimed in claim 1, wherein the plurality of radiation waveguides include at least four radiation waveguides disposed in parallel, wherein the waveguide feed further includes a fourth section, a fifth section, a sixth section and a seventh section of waveguide each having a height that is substantially half of the height of the first section of waveguide, the second section of waveguide transitioning to the fourth section of waveguide with a downward sloping ramp and transitioning to the fifth section of waveguide with an upward sloping ramp such that the fourth section of waveguide is a mirror image of the fifth section of waveguide, the third section of waveguide transitioning to the sixth section of waveguide with a downward sloping ramp and to the seventh section of waveguide with an upward sloping ramp such that the sixth section of waveguide is a mirror image of the seventh section of waveguide, each of the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh sections of waveguide being coupled to a corresponding one of the at least four radiation waveguides so that the feed waveguide form at least a one-to-four feed waveguide that feeds the at least four waveguides of the antenna array.

The leaky waveguide antenna array as claimed in claim 1, wherein each of the plurality of apertures is substantially asterisk-shaped and comprises a first crossed slot and second crossed slot, the second crossed slot having its legs offset in angle with respect to the legs of the first crossed slot to form the asterisk-shaped aperture.

7. The leaky waveguide antenna array as claimed in claim 6, wherein the plurality of asterisk-shaped apertures are disposed in the direction of the waveguide axis and spaced at half of an operating wavelength of the antenna array.

8. The leaky waveguide antenna array as claimed in claim 1, wherein each of the plurality of radiation waveguides and the feed waveguide are molded from a base material into a composite waveguide array and feed waveguide.

9. The leaky waveguide antenna array as claimed in claim 8, wherein at least internal walls of the radiation waveguides and the feed waveguide are plated with a metallic coating.

10. The leaky waveguide antenna array as claimed in claim 8, wherein each of the apertures is an insert in the molded base material.

11. The leaky waveguide antenna array as claimed in claim 8, wherein the base material is a polyetherimide.

12. The leaky waveguide antenna array as claimed in claim 8, wherein the base material is a reinforced resin.

13. A method of providing a signal to passengers within a vehicle in an area where coverage is not available, comprising the steps:

receiving in an area where coverage is available, the signal with a first receiver;

transmitting the received signal, received by the first receiver, to a second receiver that is located on a vehicle that is in an area where the signal is not available;

retransmitting the received signal, by the second receiver, to a third receiver located on a vehicle that is also within the area where the signal is not available; and

repeating the step of retransmitting the received signal between vehicles traversing the area where the signal is not available so that each of the vehicles can receive the signal.

14. The method as claimed in claim 13, wherein the signal can be any one of a live video programming signal, an interactive service signal, and a two-way communications signal.

15. The method as claimed in claim 14, wherein the step of receiving the signal includes receiving a live video programming with the first receiver disposed on an aircraft as it is leaving an area of broadcast satellite coverage and entering the area where the broadcast satellite coverage is not available.

16. The method as claimed in claim 15, wherein the area where the broadcast satellite coverage is not available is an air space above an ocean or sea and wherein a track of moving aircraft are making a flight across the ocean or sea.

17. The method as claimed in claim 13, wherein the step of retransmitting the received signal need not be performed by each vehicle in the area where the signal is not available so that at least one of the vehicles will receive the signal but will not retransmit the signal.

18. A system that provides a signal to passengers within a vehicle, comprising:

a leaky waveguide antenna that receives electromagnetic signals corresponding to the signal from a transmitter and that outputs the received electromagnetic signals to a receiver for ultimate presentation to the passengers within the vehicle;

an antenna positioning system disposed on the vehicle, the leaky waveguide antenna being mounted to the antenna positioning system and the antenna positioning system moving the leaky waveguide antenna in at least one of an azimuth plane and an elevation plane to keep the leaky waveguide antenna pointed in a direction of the transmitter;

a low-drag radome disposed above the leaky waveguide antenna array and the antenna positioning system to reduce any drag resulting from the antenna and the antenna positioning system, that is transmissive to the electromagnetic signal; and

wherein the leaky waveguide antenna array includes;

a plurality of radiation waveguides disposed in parallel to each other to form the antenna array, each of the plurality radiation waveguides having a height, a waveguide axis and having a plurality of apertures arranged in a direction of the waveguide axis; and

a feed waveguide that provides a composite wave of electromagnetic waves to form the signal received by the plurality of radiation waveguides, wherein the feed waveguide includes a first section of waveguide having a first end connected to an input/output port of the feed waveguide, having a height substantially the same as the height of each of the plurality of radiation waveguides and having a second end coupled to a first junction point, wherein at the first junction point the first section of waveguide transitions from the first section of waveguide to a second section of waveguide and a third section of waveguide that each have a height that is substantially half of the height of the first section of waveguide, and wherein the second section of waveguide transitions with an upward disposed ramp to the substantially half height and the third section of waveguide transitions to the substantially half height with a downward sloping ramp such that the second section of waveguide is a mirror image of the third section of waveguide, the feed waveguide also including a septum connected to vertical walls of the first, second and third sections of the feed waveguide that aids in the transition from the height of the first section of the feed waveguide to the height of the second section and the third section of the feed waveguide, and wherein the each of the second section and the third section of the feed waveguide are coupled to a corresponding one of the plurality of radiation waveguides.

19. The system as claimed in claim 18, wherein the leaky waveguide antenna array further comprises:

a first pair of steering arrays at a respective first side and a respective second side of the plurality of radiation waveguides, each steering array of the first pair of steering arrays having substantially the same beam pattern at a center of a beam pattern of the plurality of radiation waveguides and having a main beam pattern that is offset from the center of the beam pattern of the plurality of radiation waveguides;

a second pair of steering arrays at a respective third side and a respective fourth side of the plurality of radiation waveguides, each steering array of the second pair of steering arrays having substantially the same beam pattern at a center of a beam pattern of the plurality of radiation waveguides and having a main beam pattern that is offset from the center of the beam pattern of the plurality of radiation waveguides;

wherein the first and second pair of steering arrays are used in conjunction with the antenna positioning apparatus to keep the main beam pattern of the plurality of radiation waveguides focused on the transmitter.

20. The leaky waveguide antenna array as claimed in claim 18, wherein the antenna array and the feed waveguide are located in a same plane.

The leaky waveguide antenna array as claimed in claim 18, wherein the antenna array is located above a first plane and the feed waveguide is located below the first plane, and further including a plurality of E-plane bends, each E-plane bend coupling a corresponding signal port of the feed waveguide to a respective radiation waveguide.
