Abstract

A runout measurement and control system including an accelerometer comprising a unit that is positioned on the lathe housing and configured to measure the rotational acceleration of the lathe body during a lateral runout correction sequence. The runout measurement and control system further includes a control circuit comprising a microprocessor that analyzes the accelerometer data to provide a corrective signal that is transmitted to an automated alignment device.

Claims

1. In an on-car disc brake lathe system for resurfacing a brake disc of a vehicle brake assembly, the brake lathe comprising a lathe body with a driving motor having a drive axis and a cutting head operably secured to the body, an alignment measurement and control system comprising:

a sensor for operably securing to a component of a disc brake lathe, said sensor producing a signal that reflects a rate of angular change between the cutting head and a vehicle including the vehicle brake assembly.

2. An alignment measurement and control system as defined in claim 1 further comprising:

a control circuit configured to receive data from said sensor and configured to produce a control signal for transmission to an automatic alignment device.

3. An alignment measurement and control system as defined in claim 2 wherein said control circuit further comprises:

a microprocessor having means for storing runout data and means for comparing said stored runout data with said signal that reflects the rate of angular change of the lathe body, said microprocessor having means for transmitting a corrective signal to an automatic alignment device such that said automatic alignment device adjusts the alignment of the lathe with respect to the vehicle to mechanically compensate for runout of the disc brake assembly.

4. An alignment measurement and control system as defined in claim 1, wherein the sensor comprises an accelerometer.

5. An alignment measurement and control system as defined in claim 4, wherein the signal produced by sensor reflects rotational acceleration of the disc brake lathe.

6. An alignment measurement and control system as defined in claim 4 wherein said accelerometer comprises:

a housing and a rotor mounted for rotation within said housing.

7. An alignment measurement and control system as defined in claim 3 wherein said accelerometer further comprises:

a piezo electric element operably attached to said rotor such that rotational movement of said rotor relative to said housing produces a voltage proportional to the magnitude of bending of the piezo electric element.

8. An alignment measurement and control system as defined in claim 6 wherein said accelerometer further comprises:

a hall effect transducer secured to said housing and a corresponding magnet secured to said rotor such that rotational movement of said rotor relative to said housing produces a voltage reflective of that rotational movement.

9. An alignment measurement and control system as defined in claim 6 wherein said accelerometer further comprises:

an infrared generator and an infrared detector secured to said housing adjacent to said infrared generator and a shutter element secured to said rotor and movable therewith between said infrared generator and an infrared detector such that rotational movement of said rotor relative to said housing produces a voltage reflective of that rotational movement.

10. An alignment measurement and control system as defined in claim 6 wherein said accelerometer further comprises:

an oscillator coil secured to said housing and a ferrite body secured to said rotor, and a corresponding oscillator circuit such that a voltage reflective of that rotational movement of said rotor relative to said housing is produced when such relative rotation occurs.

11. An alignment measurement and control system as defined in claim 6 wherein said accelerometer further comprises:

a wire operably secured at one end to said body and at its other end to said rotor.

12. An alignment measurement and control system as defined in claim 11 wherein said accelerometer wire has a gage in the range of approximately 9 to 10 thousandths of an inch.

13. An alignment measurement and control system as defined in claim 11 wherein said accelerometer wire has a gage in the range of approximately 15 to 16 thousandths of an inch.

14. An alignment measurement and control system as defined in claim 6 wherein said accelerometer is secured to said lathe along its drive axis such that an axis of rotation of said rotor is perpendicular to said drive axis.

15. An alignment measurement and control system as defined in claim 6 wherein said accelerometer further comprises:

means for damping the rotational movement of said rotor.

16. An alignment measurement and control system as defined in claim 6 wherein said accelerometer further comprises:

means for limiting the rotational movement of said rotor such that rotation only occurs within a sensitive area of the accelerometer.

17. An alignment measurement and control system as defined in claim 1 wherein said sensor is configured to have a natural frequency of resonant motion that is below the frequency of lathe rotation.

18. An alignment measurement and control system as defined in claim 17, wherein the sensor comprises an accelerometer.

19. An alignment measurement and control system as defined in claim 1 wherein said sensor is configured to have a natural frequency of resonant motion that is about 1.5 times the frequency of lathe rotation.

20. An alignment measurement and control system as defined in claim 9, wherein the sensor comprises an accelerometer.
