Apparatus for transmitting communications signals over a power distribution network comprising a substation having a plurality of power lines leading from it for distributing electricity, and a plurality of communications stations coupled to respective power lines, there also being a base station for serving the plurality of communications stations on the lines,the apparatus comprising:

  • means for coupling communications signals between the base station and the distribution network, andmeans for controlling flow of the communications signals according to the station that it is desired to communicate with by preferentially coupling with a power line to which the desired communications station is coupled.
