Abstract

A stent for receiving and supporting a tissue heart valve for ultimate implantation into a human, the heart valve including tissue leaflets joined at circumferentially spaced commissures, wherein the stent includes at least one commissure support post and at least one sinus support structure each sinus support structure being disposed between but not functionally connected to an adjacent commissure support post.

Claims

1. An annular stent for receiving and supporting a heart valve for implantation into a human, the heart valve including leaflets joined at circumferentially spaced commissures, the annular stent comprising:

a plurality of circumferentially spaced commissure support posts, each commissure support post including an inflow edge;

inflow rail segments connected between the inflow edges of the commissure support posts;

said inflow rail segment having a different density than the commissure support post; and

at least one sinus support structure, said sinus support structure being disposed adjacent to but not connected to a commissure support post.

2. The stent of claim 1, wherein each commissure support post includes at least one longitudinally-extending central opening for receiving sutures attaching a commissure to the support post.

3. The stent of claim 2, wherein the central opening is enclosed by the inflow edge of the commissure support post, by an outflow edge of the commissure support post, and by side rails, each extending substantially from the inflow edge to the outflow edge.

4. The stent of claim 1, wherein the stent is composed of a metal, a polymer, a biopolymer, or compositions and composites thereof.

5. The stent of claim 1, wherein the stent is composed of a thermoplastic polymer.

6. The stent of claim 1, wherein the inflow rail is substantially sinusoidal.

7. The stent of claim 1, wherein the inflow rail segments and the inflow edges form a circumferentially continuous annular surface.

8. The stent of claim 1, wherein the commissure support posts, the inflow rail segments, and the sinus support structures are an integral structure.

9. An annular stent for receiving and supporting a heart valve for implantation into a human, the heart valve including leaflets joined at circumferentially spaced commissures, the annular stent comprising:

a plurality of circumferentially spaced commissure support posts, each commissure support post including an inflow edge, an outflow edge, and side rails, said side rails taper from narrower adjacent the outflow edge to wider adjacent the inflow edge;

inflow rail segments connected between the inflow edges of the commissure support posts; and

at least one sinus support structure, said sinus support structure being disposed adjacent to but not connected to a commissure support post.

10. The stent of claim 9, wherein each commissure support post includes at least one longitudinally-extending central opening for receiving sutures attaching a commissure to the support post.

11. The stent of claim 9, wherein the stent is composed of a metal, a polymer, a biopolymer, or compositions and composites thereof.

12. The stent of claim 9, wherein the stent is composed of a thermoplastic polymer.

13. The stent of claim 9, wherein the inflow rail is substantially sinusoidal.

14. The stent of claim 9, wherein the inflow rail segments and the inflow edges form a circumferentially continuous annular surface.

15. The stent of claim 9, wherein the commissure support posts, the inflow rail segments, and the sinus support structures are an integral structure.

16. An annular stent for receiving and supporting a heart valve for implantation into a human, the heart valve including leaflets joined at circumferentially spaced commissures, the annular stent comprising:

a plurality of circumferentially spaced commissure support posts, each commissure support post including an inflow edge and at least one longitudinally extending central opening, each commissure support post has a stiffness from about 0.59 N/mm to about 0.73 N/mm;

inflow rail segments connected between the inflow edges of the commissure support posts; and

at least one sinus support structure, said sinus support structure being disposed adjacent to but not connected to a commissure support post, said sinus support structure having a pair of diverging arms not connected to an adjacent commissure support post.

17. The stent of claim 16, wherein each commissure support post has a stiffness of about 0.6 N/mm.

18. The stent of claim 16, wherein each commissure support post includes at least one longitudinally-extending central opening for receiving sutures attaching a commissure to the support post.

19. The stent of claim 16, wherein the stent is composed of a metal, a polymer, a biopolymer, or compositions and composites thereof.

20. The stent of claim 16, wherein the stent is composed of a thermoplastic polymer.

21. The stent of claim 16, wherein the inflow rail is substantially sinusoidal.

22. The stent of claim 16, wherein the inflow rail segments and the inflow edges form a circumferentially continuous annular surface.

23. The stent of claim 16, wherein the commissure support posts, the inflow rail segments, and the sinus support structures are an integral structure.
