A method of treating an inflammatory condition in a patient in need of such treatment comprising administering to said patient an effective amount of a mimetic of superoxide dismutase (SOD) or extracellular SOD (EC-SOD) comprising a porphyrin moiety, under conditions such that said treatment is effected, wherein the mimetic is of the formula:
- ##STR23## or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, wherein;
R1 is a bond ##STR24## wherein X is a halogen and Y is an alkyl group and wherein ##STR25## indicates bonding to R2 at any position and ##STR26## indicates bonding to R2 and the substituent at any position; and
R2 is a bond ##STR27## wherein Y'"'"' is hydrogen or an alkyl group and wherein n is 1 to 8; and
R3 is --Y", --OH, --NH2, --N+ (Y")3, --COOH, --COO-, --SO3 H, --SO3-, --CH2 --PO3 H2 or --CH2 --PO3 H-, wherein Y" is an alkyl group, optionally complexed with a metal selected from the group consisting of manganese, copper and iron.

Abstract
The present invention relates, in general, to a method of modulating physiological and pathological processes and, in particular, to a method of modulating intra- and extracellular levels of oxidants and thereby processes in which such oxidants are a participant. The invention also relates to compounds and compositions suitable for use in such methods.

A method of treating a disorder resulting from aberrant smooth muscle function in a patient in need of such treatment comprising administering to said patient an effective amount of a mimetic of SOD or EC-SOD comprising a porphyrin moiety, under conditions such that said treatment is effected, wherein the mimetic is of the formula:
- ##STR28## or a phamraceutically acceptable salt thereof, wherein;
R1 is a bond, ##STR29## wherein X is a halogen and Y is an alkyl group and wherein ##STR30## indicates bonding to R2 at any position and ##STR31## indicates bonding to R2 and the substituent at any position; and
R2 is a bond, ##STR32## wherein Y'"'"' is hydrogen or an alkyl group and wherein n is 1 to 8; and
