1. A method of in-service monitoring the integrity of the path and flow of digital PCM data from a source end to a receiving end, comprising:

  • (a) generating a pseudo-random sequence of bits with an N-state pseudo-random sequence generator located at the source end where N is an integer greater than 1;

    (b) transmitting said pseudo-random sequence of bits together with said PCM data, without modifying the data using said bits, through an in-service transmission path to a receiving end; and

    (c) applying said pseudo-random sequence of bits to an N-stage pseudo-random bit sequence checker at the receiving end.
