1. A method of cleaning a grease-soiled nontextile material comprising contacting the material with a fatty acid derivative having formula I:

    ##STR22## R1 is, a hydroxyl radical or an alkali metal or ammonium salt thereof, a C1 -C4 -alkoxy radical, or a radical of a mono-, di- or triglyceride, it being possible for the two latter radicals to be of natural saturated or unsaturated fatty acids or identical or different radicals A1 ;

    R2 is a hydrophilic radical having 2-40 carbon atoms; and

    R3 is hydrogen, a C1 -C4 -alkyl radical or a hydrophilic radical having 2-40 carbon atoms.
