Abstract

An interface for performing a diagnostic or therapeutic procedure on heart tissue with an electrode structure includes a controller which operates to establish an operating condition for the electrode structure, a processing unit coupled to the controller, a memory storage device including process software adapted to be executed by the processing unit and a graphical user interface including a display screen coupled to the processing unit. The process software performs a first control application and a second control application, each control application prescribing procedures for carrying out a given task using the electrode structure, at least one of the control applications prescribing a clinical procedure affecting heart tissue. The process software further performs a first function to create on the display screen separate first and second display regions, a second function to show in the first display region a selection menu display comprising a first field for selecting the first control application for execution and a second field for selecting the second control application for execution, and a third function to show in the second display region a first graphical display during execution of the first control application and a second graphical display during execution of the second control application.

Claims

1. An interface for performing a diagnostic or therapeutic procedure on heart tissue with an electrode structure, the interface comprising:

a controller adapted to be coupled to the electrode structure for establishing an operating condition for the electrode structure;

a processing unit for processing information related to the procedure coupled to the controller;

a memory storage device including process software for execution by the processing unit;

a graphical user interface including a display screen coupled to the processing unit; and

wherein the process software is adapted to perform a first control application and a second control application, each control application prescribing procedures for carrying out a given task using the electrode structure, at least one of the control applications prescribing a clinical procedure affecting heart tissue, the process software further adapted to perform a first function to create on the display screen separate first and second display regions, a second function to show in the first display region a selection menu display comprising a first field for selecting the first control application for execution and a second field for selecting the second control application for execution, and a third function to show in the second display region a first graphical display during execution of the first control application and a second graphical display during execution of the second control application.

2. An interface according to claim 1

wherein the third function shows the first or second graphical displays in the second display region while simultaneously keeping the selection menu display showing in the first display region.

3. An interface according to claim 1

wherein the third function shows one of the first and second graphical displays in the second display region according to respective first or second field selected while blanking the other one of the first or second graphical displays.

4. An interface according to claim 1

wherein at least one of the first and second graphical displays shown by the third function includes an editable field to receive operator input.

5. An interface according to claim 4

wherein the processing unit generates commands for the controller according to operator input in the editable field.

6. An interface according to claim 1

wherein at least one of the first and second control applications prescribes a navigation task affecting the electrode structure.

7. An interface according to claim 6

wherein, during execution of the control application prescribing the navigation task, the third function shows in the second display region an image of the electrode structure.

8. An interface according to claim 7

wherein the second display region includes an editable field to receive operator input.

9. An interface according to claim 7

wherein the image comprises a real image of the electrode structure acquired by an imaging device.

10. An interface according to claim 7

wherein the image comprises an idealized graphical image of the electrode structure.

11. An interface according to claim 7

wherein the second display region includes an adjustment field to alter appearance of the image in response to operator input.

12. An interface according to claim 7

wherein, during execution of the control application prescribing the navigation task, the third function shows in the second display region an output showing location of a roving element, deployed in the patient, relative to the electrode structure.

13. An interface according to claim 7

wherein, during execution of the control application prescribing the navigation task, the third function shows in the second display region a proximity-indicating output showing the proximity of a roving element, deployed in the patient, to the electrode structure.

14. An interface according to claim 1

wherein at least one of the first and second control applications prescribes a testing task affecting the electrode structure or controller.

15. An interface according to claim 14

wherein, during execution of the control application prescribing the testing task, the third function shows in the second display region one or more data fields reflecting a test condition.

16. An interface according to claim 15

wherein one of the data fields includes an editable field to receive operator input.

17. An interface according to claim 1

wherein at least one of the first and second control applications prescribes a servicing task affecting the electrode structure or controller.

18. An interface according to claim 1

wherein, during execution of the control application prescribing the servicing task, the third function shows in the second display region one or more data fields reflecting a service condition.

19. An interface according to claim 1

wherein at least one of the first and second control applications prescribes a data printing task.

20. An interface according to claim 1

wherein the clinical procedure prescribed by the at least one control application comprises pacing heart tissue using the electrode structure.

21. An interface according to claim 20

wherein, during execution of the control application to pace heart tissue, the third function shows in the second display region data fields defining a pacing configuration of the electrode structure.

22. An interface according to claim 21

wherein at least one of the data fields includes an editable field to receive operator input.

23. An interface according to claim 21

wherein the processing unit includes a file manager function to off-load or up-load data files defining the pacing configuration.

24. An interface according to claim 20 or 21

wherein, during execution of the control application to pace heart tissue, the third function shows in the second display region data fields defining a sequence of pacing pulses applied to the electrode structure.

25. An interface according to claim 24

wherein at least one of the data fields includes an editable field to receive operator input.

26. An interface according to claim 24

wherein the processing unit includes a file manager function to off-load or up-load data files defining the sequence.

27. An interface according to claim 1

wherein the clinical procedure prescribed by the at least one control application comprises recording electrical activity in heart tissue using the electrode structure.

28. An interface according to claim 27

wherein, during execution of the control application to record electrical activity in heart tissue, the third function shows in the second display region data fields defining a recording configuration of the electrode structure.

29. An interface according to claim 28

wherein at least one of the data fields includes an editable field to receive operator input.

30. An interface according to claim 28 or 29

wherein, during execution of the control application to record electrical activity in heart tissue, the third function shows in the second display region data fields defining a sequence of conveying electrical signal data from the electrode structure.

31. An interface according to claim 30

wherein at least one of the data fields includes an editable field to receive operator input.

wherein the processing unit includes a file manager function to off-load or up-load data files defining the sequence.

33. An interface according to claim 28

wherein the processing unit includes a file manager function to off-load or up-load data files defining the recording configuration.

34. An interface according to claim 1

wherein the processing unit acquires output from the electrode structure, and

wherein the third function generates markers in at least one of the first and second graphical displays in response to the output acquired by the processing unit.

35. An interface according to claim 1

wherein the third function generates markers in at least one of the first and second graphical displays in response to operator input.

36. An interface according to claim 1,

and further including a central station that stores patient data coupled to the processing unit for transferring patient data therebetween.

37. An interface according to claim 1,

and further including a printer for printing information related to the procedure coupled to the processing unit.

38. An interface according to claim 1,

further including a storage drive coupled to processing unit, the storage drive stores information relating to at least one of the first and second graphical displays as a data base record for storage, retrieval, or manipulation.

39. An interface according to claim 1,

further including an input device for inputting patient data coupled to the processing unit, and a storage drive coupled to the processing unit, the storage drive stores patient data and information relating to at least one of the first and second graphical displays as a data base record for storage, retrieval, or manipulation.
