System and method for stabilizing and removing tissue
First Claim
1. A system for use in stabilizing and removing a piece of tissue, the system comprising:
- a. a plurality of sensors, each sensor including;
i. a temperature sensor for determining the temperature of the piece of tissue adjacent said each sensor, and for providing a first signal containing information that varies as a function of changes in said temperature;
ii. an antenna for receiving an interrogation signal containing a first identification code;
iii. a memory containing a second identification code;
iv. an ID decoder connected to said antenna and said memory for comparing said first identification code and said second identification code to assess whether said first identification code matches said second identification code; and
b. a scanner for providing said interrogation code.

Abstract
A system (8) and method for stabilizing a tissue mass, using temperature sensors (10), a scanner (80), and a cryoprobe (220). The sensors provide temperature information with respect to a tissue portion adjacent thereto. The sensors include an identification (ID) code and an ID decoder. The ID decoder compares the sensor ID code to an ID code contained in an interrogation signal provided by the scanner. If the codes match, the sensor transmits the temperature information to the scanner, which processes and displays the temperature information in a humanly recognizable form. The method includes the step of inserting a cryoprobe into a tissue volume to be stabilized so that a portion of the cryoprobe projects therefrom. Then, the tissue volume is frozen while monitoring the size or temperature of the tissue volume. Freezing is terminated when the tissue volume is frozen (or reaches a first temperature level), and then removed while grasping the cryoprobe so as to stabilize the tissue volume.

12. A system for use in freezing tissue, the system comprising:
-
a. a plurality of sensors, each sensor for determining the temperature of tissue adjacent thereto and providing a first signal containing (i) information regarding said temperature and (ii) a first identification code that uniquely identifies said each sensor in response to receipt of an interrogation signal having a second identification code that matches said first identification code; and b. a scanner for receiving said first signal, determining (a) the identity of each of said plurality of sensors based on said identification code and (ii) said temperature of tissue adjacent said each temperature sensor based on said information, and providing a humanly recognizable representation of said temperature of tissue adjacent said each temperature sensor. - View Dependent Claims (13, 14, 15)

16. A temperature sensor comprising:
-
a. a temperature measuring unit for measuring the temperature of tissue adjacent thereto and providing a first signal that contains temperature information that varies as a function of changes in said temperature; b. an antenna for receiving a second signal containing a first identification code; c. a memory for storing a second identification code; and d. an identification decoder connected to said antenna and said memory for comparing said first identification code with said second identification code to determine if said first identification code is identical to said second identification code and for generating a third signal when said first identification code is identical to said second identification code. - View Dependent Claims (17, 18, 19, 20)
