Satellite telephone interference avoidance system
First Claim
1. A satellite communications system, comprising:
- a plurality of measurement terminals that are spatially distributed within a portion of a terrestrial coverage area of the satellite communications system, said measurement terminals measuring, over a band of frequencies allocated to the satellite communications system, an amount of interference that is due, at least in part, to another communications system that operates in a frequency band that overlaps at least a portion the band of frequencies, said plurality of measurement terminals each comprising a transmitter for transmitting an indication of the measured interference; and
a controller coupled to a receiver for receiving the transmitted indications and comprising a memory for storing the received indications of the measured interference, said controller operating to identify frequency channels for use by a ground station that serves satellite user terminals within the portion of the terrestrial coverage area, the frequency channels being identified in such a manner so as to reduce an amount of satellite power required to provide a desired level of service quality to the satellite user terminals serviced by the at least one ground station.

Abstract
A method is disclosed for operating a first satellite communications system of a type that operates co-frequency with at least one second transmission system, such as a second satellite communications system. The method includes steps, executed during the operation of the first satellite communications system, of measuring at a plurality of locations within a coverage area of the first system an amount of interference resulting at least in part from the at least one second transmission system, the amount of interference being measured over a band of frequencies allocated to the first system; (b) transmitting an indication of the measured interference from each location to a central site; and (c) in accordance with the transmitted indications, assigning at least one user terminal to a sub-band of frequencies within the band of frequencies so as to reduce an amount of interference experienced by the user terminal.

10. A satellite communications system, comprising:
-
at least one satellite providing a terrestrial coverage area of the satellite communications system; a plurality of measurement terminals that are spatially distributed within at least a portion of the terrestrial coverage area of the satellite communications system, said measurement terminals measuring, over a band of frequencies allocated to the satellite communications system, an amount of interference that is due, at least in part, to a transmitter that operates in a frequency band that overlaps at least a portion the band of frequencies, said plurality of measurement terminals each comprising an output for outputting an indication of the measured interference; and a controller coupled to said output of each of said measurement terminals for receiving the indications of the measured interference and comprising a memory for storing the received indications of the measured interference, said controller operating to remove a self-interference component from the received indications of the measured interference so as to identify frequency channels for use by satellite user terminals within the portion of the terrestrial coverage area, the frequency channels being identified in such a manner so as to provide a desired level of service quality to the satellite user terminals. - View Dependent Claims (11, 12, 13, 14)

15. A method for operating a satellite communications system, comprising steps of:
-
providing a plurality of measurement terminals that are spatially distributed within at least a portion of a terrestrial coverage area of the satellite communications system; operating the measurement terminals to measure, within a band of frequencies allocated to the satellite communications system, an amount of interference that is due, at least in part, to a transmission from another communications system; outputting an indication of the measured interference from various ones of the measurement terminals; receiving and storing the outputted indications; and accessing the stored indications for use in selecting portions of the band of frequencies that are to be assigned to a ground station that serves satellite user terminals within the terrestrial coverage area, the selected portions of the band of frequencies being chosen, at least in part, to reduce an amount of satellite power required to provide a desired level of service quality to the satellite user terminals serviced by the ground station. - View Dependent Claims (16, 17, 18)
