1. A method of treating microbial infection in a ruminating or pre-ruminating ruminant, comprising orally administering to the ruminant a veterinary composition comprising a dosage of about 0.4-40 mg/kg of a fluoroquinolone or a pharmaceutically effective salt thereof in a pharmaceutically acceptable, orally acceptable inert carrier in the form of an oral bolus, wherein the composition provides therapeutic antimicrobial blood levels of said fluoroquinolone effective to treat a microbial infection in the ruminant for at least 24 hours, and wherein the microbial infection is caused by one or more of Staphylococcus, Lactobacillus, Streptococcus, Sarcina, Escherichia, Enterobacter, Klebsiella, Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, Proteus, Citrobacter, Neisseria, Bacillus, Bacteroides, Peptococcus, Clostridium, Salmonella, Shigella, Serratia, Haemophilus, Pasteurella and Brucella.
