Abstract

This invention relates to carbon based initiators for polymerization and telomerization reactions. Polymers produced are useful as water repellants and materials with high temperature resistance. Telomers are useful as intermediates in the production of chemically inert and temperature resistant materials.

Claims

1. A telomerization process comprising telomerizing monomer compounds of the formula X₂ C═

CYZ, where X is H or F, Y is H, F or CH₃, where at least one of X and Y is F, and Z is H, F, OR_F '"'"', Cl, CH₂ OH, R_F '"'"', R or CO₂ R'"'"' where R_F '"'"' is perfluoroalkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, R is alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and R'"'"' is alkyl or polyfluoroalkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms with telogens of the structure RI, RBr or RCl, where R is selected from the group consisting of hydrocarbyl or polyhaloalkyl, in the presence of fluorinated carbon catalyst, in the absence of Lewis acid, in the optional presence of a solvent.

2. The telomerization process of claim 1 wherein the monomers are selected from CF₂ ═

CF₂, CF₂ ═

CFCl, CF₂ ═

CHF, CF₂ ═

CH₂, CH₂ C═

(CH₃)CO₂ CF₃, CH₂ ═

CHC₄ F₉, and CH₂ ═

CHCO₂ CH(CF₃)₂.

3. The process of claim 1 wherein the wherein the fluorinated carbon is a fluorographite and the monomer compound is tetrafluoroethylene.

4. The process of claim 3 wherein the fluorinated carbon is a fluorographite.

5. Process according to claim 4 wherein the reaction temperature is about -10°

C. to about 250°

C.

6. The process of claim 5 wherein the reaction temperature is about -10 to about 120°

C.

7. The process of claim 1 wherein the telogen is selected from the group consisting of CF₃ CF₂ I, CF₃ CF₂ CF₂ I, F(CF₂)₄ I, C₂ F₅ I, F(CF₂)₆ I, F(CF₂)₈ I, (CF₃)₂ CFI, BrCF₂ CFClBr, CF₂ Br₂, CCl₄, CF₃ OCF₂ CF₂ I, C₃ F₇ OCF₂ CF₂ I, ClCF₂ CFClI, I(CF₂)₃ I, I(CF₂)₄ I and BrCF₂ CF₂ Br.

8. The process of claim 1 wherein the telogen is F(CF₂)_n I where n is 2 to 8, and the monomer is TFE.

9. The process of claim 1 wherein the reaction temperature is 25 degrees to 150 degrees C.

10. The process of claim 3 wherein the wherein the fluorinated carbon is a fluorographite or flurographite intercolated with SbF₅, the monomer compound is tetrafluoroethylene and the telomer is RI.

11. The process of claim 3 wherein the wherein the fluorinated carbon is a fluorographite, the monomer compound is tetrafluoroethylene and the telomer is RI.
